Carolina Scholars Awards Program

Does anyone know what it takes to earn one of these awards, and how you are notified?

You may have already looked, but here is what is says on the website-

and here are frequently asked questions - [The Office of Scholarships & Student Aid at UNC-Chapel Hill](http://studentaid.unc.edu/studentaid/faq/ssa_scholarship_faq.html#Q1) .

My son received one of the smaller merit scholarships and received a notification letter in March. With all the strong students at UNC, it’s hard to know exactly how some get picked and others do not. We were just happy that he did.

I’m a senior at Carolina and a Carolina Scholar. Feel free to PM me any questions about Carolina or the program (I don’t check here too often and so if you just reply to the post I may not see).

My son was offerred one of these last year. He was invited to the Honors Program and then to Scholarship Day. Prior to Scholarship Day, he was sent an article to read. At Scholarship Day, the article was discussed in a small group with a faculty member. Following the discussion, the students had to write a brief essay. He actually attended a makeup Scholarship Day because of a conflict with the first date. His stats were 2340 SAT, 10/484 class rank, 10 APs, 4.0 unweighted GPA, 5.1 weighted GPA and lots of ECs. UNC was not his first choice and he was accepted at his first choice and is a freshman there. As a result, I can’t give you any more details about other Carolina Scholars. We are instate and he attended a high school that sends 30+ kids to UNC each year. I believe if your student is invited to Scholarship Day, UNC will offer them some sort of merit aid.
