What percentage of freshman, or other students, have cars at Whitman?
Would having a car be an advantage from a student's perspective, or would caring for one be more trouble than it's worth?

Also ... do you need four-wheel drive for winter?

According to the Whitman web site:
"First year students are strongly encouraged not to bring a car. There is a newly remodeled grocery store, and many other stores downtown within walking distance of campus. Everything in Walla Walla is within walking or biking distance. Walla Walla also has a great bus system that goes out to the mall and the other shopping centers for 50 cents each way. Parking around campus is very limited and students may find that they need to park a block or two from their residence hall."

Well, my daughter is planning on bringing her car, and we will just see how it goes. If it turns out to be too much trouble, or does not get enough use to justify having it there, and she can bring it home on a break.

How far is Whitman from your home, concerneddad? Will you and your wife follow her when she moves in?

I am a current freshman without a car. I live in Ca, so it's a really long drive to and from campus to bring a car. Many first yrs don't have cars because they come from out-of-state like me. But I have a problem with :"Walla Walla also has a great bus system that goes out to the mall and the other shopping centers for 50 cents each way. Parking around campus is very limited and students may find that they need to park a block or two from their residence hall." I haven't used the bus system because I hear it's a hassle and difficult to catch. And I don't know what "mall" that the Whitman website is talking about. Walla Walla doesnt have a mall, we have shopping centers, but no proper "mall" per se. Downtown is very cute, but not that great for shopping. Even though I don't have a car, for my friends that do, parking doesn't seem to be a huge problem. (And parking "a block away" isn't that difficult ;)) For people that live in the Pacific NW, having a car on campus doesn't seem to be very hard in terms of parking, safety, regulations, etc. (For students not bringing a car, don't worry, it's not a necessity and most first yrs don't have cars) I hope this helps.

ASAP: We are about 6 hours away from Wall Walla. And yes, we will follow her there to move her in and see how it goes from there.

thanks, cd -
Whitman remains one of my son's top choices, so I was trying to imagine how (if) he would get his car up to walla walla if he does attend.
I agree LAC operon that parking "a couple of blocks away" seems like a small price to pay for transportation when you need it. My son is used to having his own transportation, and I sort of like it that way - especially if the alternative is relying on other kids for rides.
My son loves the outdoors and will want to take advantage of the
Pacific NW beauty -
Maybe we could drive his car up with him, and take the plane home. :)Then I can fly back after school is out and ride back with him. (unless he finds a passenger he would prefer to have ride with him by that time. )

Thanks for the tip LAC,

Since I am from Seattle I plan on bringing a car if I am accepted. It's just simpler that way in cases when I have to go home, etc. And plus, I want to go to the cities once in a while to go shopping, you know?

Do you think car theft/vandalism would be a problem if I park 'a block or two away' from the residence halls? I don't mind parking so far away - I'm sure I won't be driving all that much - but I don't want my car broken into or worse.
