Cars in College

oh by the way it goes 25 miles to the gallon, so I fill up about once a week at best...good deal if you ask me.

I know that, but hey people would hate me cuz I have a nice car? trust me, there'll be a lotta people who'd like me too

honestly, if youre this concerned about your car, i wouldn't want to be friends with you anyway. who cares what kind of car you drive.. I certainly don't. If anything I would think even less of you since you're driving an SUV.. I don't care if it's a porshe or what. I've got friends at school that drive bmw's and benz's.. and they're not stuck up or spoiled at all. just because you have a nice car doesn't mean youre spoiled. but if you go around second guessing your every move (oh will they hate me if i do this. will they hate me if i do that).. then they'll hate you regardless. Sorry, just my two cents.

(and my car gets 36mpg)

Buy what you want to buy. Why would you even want to be friends with someone jealous enough to key your car? If anything, I would buy a $50,000 car (such as BMW 5 series), save the other $10,000 to buy a crappy car, and then go crash it into the hater's vehicle. Just brush them off and keep living your life; it's not their money.

Where do you get off calling them "pretty decent" they are massively expensive crap-barges. Porsche made a terrible decision...they make little sports cars...and the landrover is just too damn expensive for what it is.

If you are gonna buy a new car...go with the subaru or the honda or a VW (girls like the golf/jetta and now you can get the 5th gen jettas) and save the money. Just because you can afford something doesnt mean its the right choice.

I wouldn't hate you for being rich. I'd buy the car you like best if you can afford it and don't need the money for any better purpose. In all honesty, if I had the money I'd get a Corvette. Screw what the others think, you've got one life and it's your decision.

All-wheel drive isn't really all that important either. For snow, front-wheel drive is usually just as good, and sometimes better.

I'm something of a luddite, so I can't relate to wanting a car.

Don't you think friends who like you for your car would be rather superficial?

What an idea!

If you still need a car for your "image" how about a bmw 3-series. IMHO they are very much preferrable to what you suggested and at half the price. They drive like a dream and are still fairly easy on the gas and parking

saturns are highly popular

Everyone likes my (parents) car that I drive, everyone and I mean everyone is impressed and love it. Guess what, it's not an SUV, not a sports car, and plus, it gets 55-60 miles to a gallon.

Why don't you go out and buy a Prius.

"All-wheel drive isn't really all that important either. For snow, front-wheel drive is usually just as good, and sometimes better."

Excuse me? You must be out of your mind not to regard TheHunk's safety. Have you ever driven in snow like upstate NY? AWD is the best to get. More and more car companies are converting their cars to follow the Subaru's model. Why do you think so many people in snow-blasted areas like Subarus? You don't have to worry about changing your car from 2WD to 4WD or whatever, your AWD car will take care of you. Suppose you drive a 2WD and one of the front wheel gets stuck in a ditch, how do you propose to get it out if the wheel just spins?

TheHunk, go for a Subaru. People will feel safe driving with you because it's a good car to have in the winter and it holds its value very well. If it was snowing and my ride has a 2WD, i would think twice of how badly I need to get to my destination.

Subaru is definitely the best! (as I stated in earlier posts) lol.
Doesn't the Prius have a really long waiting list?

Tickle: Amount of times that we have driven two wheel drive vehicles in heavy snow through paper routes: 7 years. Amount of times stuck: Like once.

amount of years i've been driving my two wheel drive cars in heavy snow : 6. amount of times stuck : none. amount of times that i've actually slid : once.

MN Averages: 72-100 inches a year. Southern Minnesota is slightly less, yet they seem to have the most school cancellations. My dad's joke: "You know your from North Dakota when you can drive 60 MPH unflinching through a blizzard" which is something that I can verify that he has done!

NY Average: 94, a lot of it has to do with the "lake effect," I guess. Minnesota has 10,000 lakes, but I'm not sure how big a factor it is here. There also seems to be a HUGE variation, from like 30-100 inches a year depending on how far south you are.

one kid from north carolina is going to a school in PA, and we got like an inch of snow and he called his school to see if school was canceled and pretty much got laughed at. I got a kick out of that.

AWD drive is great for accelerating...it doesn't really help you stop. Where safety is concerned, stopping should be more important. Unfortuanately, many (not all) people with AWD suffer from overconfidence because of the system. For that reason, almost every vehicle I see in a ditch is AWD. Front wheel drive gives good control, caution, and really isn't all that liable to get stuck if you are driving intelligently and using studded tyres.
Manufacturers are converting cars to AWD because that's were the demand is. That said, AWD isn't bad, if you know how to use it. I like Subarus.

We get a fair amount of snow up here, although ice is often more of a concern.

I just remembered a nice example..

My friend and my brother have four-wheel drive vehicles- a Ford Explorer and a Dodge Durango.

On paper routes (which require repeated stopping and driving through snow) the Durango's 4-wheel drive isn't bad- it's just terrible. In the few weeks we used it in the snow, we skidded several times, and at one point nearly crushed a poor little car sitting in a driveway because we couldn't stop. When we turned off 4WD, all went well!

My Dodge Stratus got stuck once- in 3 FEET OF SNOW. The funny thing about the Stratus was the smell of burning rubber the tires made when we did the route on the day it got stuck.

You might visit the campus and examine the parking lot for what SUVs students there drive. Probably Pathfinders, Explorers, RAVs, Cherokees, etc. Why draw attention to yourself in a Cayenne or Range Rover? Some drunk may just key your car if for no other reason than he hates people like you. Downplay it somewhat; a little modesty goes a long way. But you'll definitely need a reliable SUV at Syracuse, but it shouldn't be so outrageous. The more outrageous cars & SUVs are usually seen on campus over Parents Weekend.
