Cars in College

I would suggest you get an SUV, or another car that handles well in snow, if you're going to college in upstate New York. If you're parents are willing to buy you an awesome car like a Porsche Cayenne for college, definetely take it. Just don't shove it in other people's faces that you have such a nice car. Just avoid acting like a stuck up rich kid, and people won't think less of you.

I like SUVs, my family has an SUV, we live in ND and it snows here. Alot . But you don't need an SUV to drive in the snow. It is more about knowing how to drive on wet icy roads with low visibility. A basic car would work just fine. Maybe not rear wheel drive because that handles funny but anything is fine to drive with in the snow.

I'd go with the Range. Cayenne's look kind of weird in my opinion. Unless of course you opt for the Cayenne Turbo.

The reason your durango sucks in the snow is that its a heavy SUV.

You still only have 4 tires to stop you no matter if you are driving a hummer or a metro. The heavy SUV's (and their 4 wheel drive) benefit the most at LOW speeds when you are trudging through massive snowbanks caused by partially plowed road systems and things like that. At speed, you are better off in a car thats either FWD or AWD. I live in MN and FWD has never been a problem for me and I am the kind of person who WANTS to go out driving in the big snowfalls.

syracuse doesn't allow freshmen to have cars, wait until sophomore year. by then you'll know who your friends are and they won't really care what you drive. pick the car that you like better.

i dont know why u guys are dogging him if he has a nice car.... i would by all means take a nice car gladly and so would any of you! i think as long as you arent an ******* about it and try to say "yea... i drive a porsche or RR... something u could never afford" or something... then you should be fine. and many girls being as shallow as they are... will flock to you like white on rice.

For syraucse.. Number 1 its snows alot. YOu need an SUV, the streets are cleared pretty quickly, but those around campus sometimes are not and its hard to get out of the lots.

Freshman, can and do have cars on campus. It depends on your major. Education majors for example are allowed to have cars. So do others who may have a job off campus. YOu need to call if you want a car and see what the parking dept. says. The lot you are assigned may not be near your dorm, and may be outside uncovered not to great in the snow.

Many students at syracuse have nice cars. YOu will NOT be the only range rover or porsche there, but many also have mazdas subarus and so on. Get what you want, and what you'll be comfortable in and dont worry about everyone else.

Stain99 and ticklemepink-I also have a Suburu (a green '95 Legacy station wagon with 136,000 miles). I do a fair amount of driving, and I fill up my car with gas about once week (which costs about $10-15 each time). Considering how much some people spend on gas, I think it's a great deal! I would STRONGLY reccomend Suburus- they are AMAZING in the snow!!! When we get snow in Northern VA (which is a couple times during the winter), my parents find it easier to drive the Suburu than our big Expedition. I'll probably end up taking my Suburu to college, since my college (Sweet Briar College) allows first years to have cars. :)

I wouldn't buy such an expensive car. If you aren't used to driving in the snow, and suppose you get in a fender bender you are stuck. Repairs on expensive cars aren't cheap. Unless you're rich by a more realistic car.

I'd look into the new Audi RS4 or S4 sedan or the S4 wagon. You could debadge it so it didn't look quite as expensive (but still nice), and yet it would still be fast as hell and good in the snow.

Another vote here for Subaru! They are definitely the best overall vehicle in the snow. You must remember that not all SUVs have full time 4 wheel drive. My Honda Pilot is front wheel drive until you engage the 4 wheel drive. You can't keep it in 4WD all the time, so it doesn't really help with daily driving on messy roads like my Subaru Foresters did. It does work great to pull you out of a snow bank, however (of course, neither of these are "status" cars, if that's what you are looking for).

You people need to get a life - if he or his parents have the money to buy one of those cars, what's the big deal?!

TheHunk, the immature reactions of many to your question are exactly why you shouldn't get a Cayenne or Rover. I was in a similar situation going off to college. My parents were going to buy me a new car, and I was set on a Cayenne, which they were willing to buy for me. At my high school, kids were driving SL500s, M3s, Range Rovers, etc. I myself had an SLK230, and these cars were no big deal, though I knew going to college, the typecasting would be there, and I didn't want to deal with it. In the end, I settled with a Volkswagen Touareg. As you may or may not know, the Touareg is built on the same platform as the Porschse Cayenne, they even share engines and powertrains. They are essentially the same vehicle, and the Touareg offers everything the Cayenne does except the panoramic roof. I really enjoy it, because I can have a nice, luxury SUV with features like navigation, air suspension, etc, but since it is a Volkswagen, nobody thinks anything of it. Plus, you'll save your parents $25,000+ over a Cayenne. Not only is a Cayenne S more expensive than a Touareg V8 (which uses a slightly detuned, but still powerful 4.2L 310HP V8, the same one used in the Audi A8), but because Porschse sells all their equipment ala carte, even leather seats, the Cayenne gets expensive fast!

Enjoy your car, whatever you chose. Don't let people criticize you for what you drive. Just because someone's parents are fortunate enough to spoil their child with a nice car does not mean that they don't deserve it or are spoiled brats.

You don't need an SUV just because it snows, lol. True, some people would like you, but a larger number wouldn't like you, and I would say to go with a car that makes everybody kinda like you. A good road trip car, not a snob car.

is a mini cooper considered a nice convienient college car or spoiled brat stuff?
to op, if u want nice suv but not showy , i think the volvo is nice and all but is not half as showy as a cayenne..

a $20k car is def not "spoiled brat stuff". $35-40 is cutting it. id say the mini is a good car but only if your a girl, guys will be made fun of.
i would of bought my car this year, but since my college does not allow them first year i cant get it,but as soon as soph year rolls around ill be in my evo9,ready to go....

One can easily get through the winter with a typical sedan.

I still don't understand why anyone needs a Porsche to attend college with. You can spend the tens of thousands of dollars on something more important, like paying off loans - unless you have enough money that even that won't be problem.

......back to suv is good? conversation- I live in Florida and i'm going to college in Albany, NY. Freshmen are not allowed to have cars at my school, but I will bring up my car up there sophomore year. I have a 2003 Toyota Highlander, and being a Floridian, I have no clue if I have 2 wheel drive, 4 wheel drive, etc. (in reality i dont even know what they mean...HEY im from Florida). I know i have this button in my car labeled "snow" and some other letters. I was just wondering if you guys could help me figure out if my car is good for snow. Yeaa i have a year to figure the car situation out, but i am curious. I've never driven in snow. I more than likely will not buy a new car.

You all should be lucky to be having your cars in college....because I'm moving from one coast to the other, I have to depend on public transportation/friends!

If I get even the cheapest 10-yr old, run-down, rusted Kia, I'd be very happy! :D

all sports cars are "bad" in snow, every other car is "good" in snow. just drive smart and you'll be okay. their are no cars "designed" for snow conditions. an suv is a "good" snow car
