About how common are cars on campus? And...is parking difficult, or is there an abundance of parking? if so...are permits expensive?

oh and...if not...how's the public transportation in the area?

is there an abundance of parking?

lol no, I'm sorry, parking is definitely not available in abundance, although one would never know it from the 40+ parking structures and lots on campus. There are about 25,000+ cars that park on campus every day, but very few of those are students. Getting a permit works on a point system (you get points for commuting from home, having a job really far away, etc. etc.), and are very difficult to get. When you do get one, they are very expensive (I think between $800-$1000 for the school year).

Public transportation is pretty good. We have the UCLA buses for stuff immediately around campus, the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus system for anything from campus to the ocean, and LA Metro, etc. for getting other places. I have never had a problem getting somewhere.

heh...alright, thanks:)

(i guess my poor old volvo stays all the way across the country then =()

If you live far away enough or have a job, you can get parking. Here are the rates: http://www.transportation.ucla.edu/parking/parkrate.htm.

$210/quarter ! yeah...definetely not bringing a car for at least my first year...

i live out of state (md) so i'll have to live on campus anyways =).

Yeah - people dont' bring cars until they move off campus into the apartments, and i would say most of the time not even then.
Would be a fun drive in September for you though haha - Volvo's are cool :)

I'm hoping to find a place close enough so I can walk, run, bike or bus to campus. I want to sell my beloved S2000. A white guy driving an S2000 is quite a rarity at UCLA. ;) I will miss it. But it's a great way to save money and I will be spending most of my time on campus anyways.

There's not even a curb you can fit your car into? Not a single little space you can keep your car snugged away in until you want to use it?

Well, there is the curb along Gayley and some random curb space throughout the aparment area of westwood, but good luck with that - those spots are filled all day (although I've heard you might be able to find a spot if you get there at like 5am).

See, this is why I like driving an ambulance around - Go out to Westwood for food, and park wherever the hell I want  hehe
