Does anyone know the car/parking situation at Penn, especially for freshman?

I think there is a lot of theft so I wouldnt risk having a car

Forget it unless you're willing to spend better than $100/month on parking. You could leave your car on the street but...

In any case, your insurance will cost a fortune, Philly drivers are among the worst in the country, and you can walk/cab/transit pretty much anywhere you need to go anyway.

Really, don't bother.

It's hard to find free street parking too. It gets to the point where you don't want to drive because you don't want to lose your spot.

And you really can get anywhere with public transportation.

There's no point in having a car.

Assuming SEPTA isn't on strike... curses!

You definitely don't need a car.

Even if you want to pay that much for a parking space, it's still really hard to find places to park...

ANSWER TO ORIGINAL Q: There is none. You can have a car IF: you are uber-wealthy, your parents will spring for the car, your parents will spring for the off campus garage. It'll cost a ton, and you'll never use the car, cuz it's pointless to drive that thing around philly, there's almost no parking (there's some, i was surprised on my visit, and i parallel parked for the first and only time in my life), and the only time you'll use it is to go to the beach or parks once a month. Which is great if u have unlimited coin to blow on this. Otherwise, fuggetaboutit

Philly drivers are bad? Pfff.. whatever, I live in Boston. NOTHING surprises me anymore. Bostonians are the nicest people in the world, but the second we hit the roads.. ha. I guess that's why New Englanders call us M*******s.

Just wondering, do you guys have rotaries in your states? I asked a friend from MO and she said, 'what are rotaries?'

they had 'em in NY. I'm sure they have them there. In fact, I think i saw some in Pittsburgh and Sayre, so I'm pretty sure PENNSYLVANIA has them, if not NECESSARILY PHILADELPHIA.

PA has a few, but not everywhere. NJ is "rotary city. "

wait....New Jersey is a city?

You got me - ha ha!

yea.. NJ is just as bad as Boston (if were doing city comparisons.. ;) ).. erf.. were just good at sucking at driving (<-- wow my english is certainly ivy league material.. hehe)

nah, port charlotte is the worst driving conditions in the world.

think:

two lane roads
thousands of geriatric part time residents
and a 17 mile drive to school

....Death

Ok. boston drivers are not THAT bad. if you know how to drive then it is not hard at all to get around.
