Since cars were mentioned (in the reputation thread, I believe), I was reminded of some questions I have concerning that topic.

My parents don't want me to have my car at Wake for freshman year, I don't think. And I can see where they're coming from; I'd have to drive it down from where I am (the Philly area), which would be a terrible inconvenience. On the other hand, I know I would hate not being able to get around on my own, and, well, I just love my car (such a terrible argument, but I don't care!).

So first, what's the deal with freshmen and cars? Is any freshman allowed to have a car, and are there any special parking info bits I should know?
Secondly, is it worth having a car enough that I should bother trying to convince my parents to let me bring mine?

Freshmen can have cars; they have to park in satellite parking that's about a 7-minute walk away, I think. They can be useful in that there's not really that much to do that you can directly walk to around campus. However, you can probably find friends that are more than willing to take you places, too.

It's probably up to you. Personally, if I end up going, I'll bring mine...but then again, I'm only a few hours away. If I lived near Philly, I probably wouldn't want to go through the hassle.

Good question. If I had to guess... if you don't want to depend on people to go places, go ahead and bring your ride down. If you are very sociable, like going places with anyone, you can ride with other people. Especially if you're going to be in a frat/sorority, you'll always get rides anywhere. Wake has a reputation of being a boring college town, so if you go places every weekend, say concerts, play it safe. But then again, you might as well give it a try for your first semester without a car. If you really feel inconvenienced Fall semester, bring your car after you go back home for break, for Spring semester.

Personally, I've never really felt like I needed a car. It's really an inconvenience for a lot of people that we have to park in satelite parking (and the student drive lot, even though it's patrolled, isn't exactly the safest spot on campus, although it's still probably safer than any part of the campuses of a lot of colleges).
