Do Arts and Sciences students typically start taking foreign language course(s) during 1st semester of freshman year? I ask b/c it seems that a biology freshman would have a heavy load 1st semester:
Intro Bio - 4 cred.
Gen Chem - 4 cred.
FWS - 3 cred.
Math - 4 cred.
Foreign Lang - 3/4 cred.
= 18/19 credits

and I don't even think that many credits are allowed...

Have you taken any language classes in highschool cause you may be able to use some of that credit if you took an AP and scored high. I think.
but to answer your question: Yes and no. Bio majors have so much crap they have to do. If you can test into a higher level of language, you might be able to start 2nd sem. but if you have to start from the beginning, you have to start 1st. sem. (this has really ****ed me off how they do this cause some people really want to study a language but have to wait till further down the line do do so cause 1st sem always is for beginning. CU never does 1st level material starting second sem.) I have a friend who took a 1 sem Spanish class for Pre-med/bio majors. Easier level of spanish it was Medical spanish.

18 to 19 credits is very medium workload. Now that doesn't mean you won't have a difficult time. lol. I'm just saying that that is a normal credit amount for a semester. I don't think I've ever gone over 18 (but thats gonna have to change soon. lol cause I'm a junior this year and I need more credits to graduate on time).... I know someone who had 24 freaking credits last semester. Crazy. I think if you go that high you have to petition though (if you are a freshman) 12 credits is the minimum in A&S.

Thanks for the replies. I'm expecting to be placed in either Continuing French or Intermediate French after taking the placement exam, so I think I might put off foreign language for a semester.
