Cas gpa

What is the average CAS GPA for undergraduates by end of freshman year? Is a 3.5 by end of Junior year competitive for Penn CAS students and how does it to compare to the rest of the ivies, Duke, etc? Do that add or subtract to the GPA to weight it for it's "iviness"

For a top MBA program (Haravrd, Stanford, Chicago, Northwestern, etc) what would be a competitive GPA?

Thank you very much for any input.

I can’t speak to the latter figures any, but the average college GPA is around 3.5-3.6. For Wharton, it’s around 3.2-3.3, and for Engineers, it’s around 2.8. No idea what it is for Nursing.

My general rule of thumb is that a 3.7+ from an Ivy won’t keep you out of any program.

Don’t think MBA programs care that much about your college gpa. Its more about work experience, GMAT an interviews. That said, college is curved to about a 3.5, Wharton is curved to a 3.0 and engineering about a 2.8.

What gpa you should expect depends on how you mix and match those courses (note that what courses are curved to =/= average gpa since for example, many wharton students take lot of college courses).

Thanks for the replies. I don’t understand curving very much, but the statement that “college is curved to about a 3.5” mean that it is the average GPA of all CAS students at the end of their UG? So if you were at 3.5 then you are an average student in the college?

It just seems that if you had 3 B’s or B+'s in the first year, then you almost have to make straight A-s at least for the remaining time to average slightly above a 3.5. That seems like a tough call.

HBS website says their average GPA is 3.75 for their MBA class profile! The strength of work experience and GMAT have to overcome the GPA requirement considerably then!

I think the CAS average is ~3.4, although that could simply be for the whole school.

when we say curved to x, it means the average score for a the typical class will have an average gpa of x. It doesn’t really help to get the average gpa of any one school at Penn, since it depends how many courses in various areas you take (in general, order of difficulty sciences/anything quantitative>social science>humanities). Some humanities courses etc aren’t curved at all but we’re generally talking about ‘core’ classes which are required for majors etc.

Thanks for the explanation.
