I’m just going to clear the myth that you should apply to CGS if you have lower stats. An email from BU:

"Hello Mike,

Because you are automatically reviewed for the College of General Studies if you are not accepted to the school you apply to, I would recommend applying to a school at Boston University that you are most interested in. There are GPA requirements for entrance into the other school at Boston University from the College of General Studies . Please contact that school at (617) 353-2850 to find out those requirements.

Sincerely,

That should clear that up. Apply to the school you would like to go to.

I don't know why anyone would want to go to BU General Studies. It's basically a very VERY expensive community college. If you going to transfer to BU after one or two years might as well go to a state school or community college and get 4.0 to transfer. You'll save a heck lot of money too.
(I'm waiting for BU#1 fan, jPod, to bash me).

Besides the fact that it's not a guarantee that you will be able to transfer from a cc, you still get the full college experience if you attend CGS as oppose to cc, where it's like high school part 2 and usually accompanied by living at home.

Calling CGS Community College is a very immature thing to say, but I wouldnt expect much more coming from someone in Chestnut Hill. CGS and the regular school are not much different despite popular belief. We take almost all the same classes. Why would I want to go to CC, or my state U when I can go to the school I want to for a full four years? Money isnt an issue. My parents can afford to pay for all four years at BU with no need for financial aid. So tell me, why would I not go to CGS?

With a 57% regular admission rate and a 30% transfer rate, getting into BU is not terribly difficult. This doesn't mean BU students are idiots, I believes that most BU students can compete with BC students in any academic field, but the school is not very competitive. I believe that most students with a 3.75+ from (perhaps even lower) their community college can be admit to BU, not a sure thing, but their chances are good. Going to GS gives you a guarantee entrance (provided you pass all your classes to transfer) but that "guarantee" comes at a hefty price without a lot independence. Sticking to a strict core isn't liberating.

Recheck the facts Red - CGS admission to other schools is NOT guaranteed. Every year there are students that do not meet minimum requirements or prereqs to get into the school they choose after the fact. That is not to say that you don't have a preference going into the application process because that would be a lie, CGS gets a lot of help getting into schools esp SMG. They have to take a class called SM 299 (it's a beast) but CGS students are put into the same sections and have different grading criteria (Don't try to call me a liar, I have heard it from the instructors in those sections who got the memo from Dean Laitiff - it's been like this for last 10 years).

CGS offers students a broad and rounded education (though admittedly lacking in "team projects") in addition to access to all of the facilities of a world class research university.

Wait, skinnyfist was implying that CGS is automatic transferable (if you have the grade) by saying that cc is not "automatic" transferable. Can you BU students make up your mind on the policy of your school? Let see what BU has to say:

"All CGS freshmen are accepted as four-year bachelor’s degree candidates, who, upon completion of the core program and elective courses outside of CGS, continue to their choice of any of the liberal arts and professional degree programs in Boston University's ten undergraduate schools and colleges"

That sound like guaranteeing it to me. and I did say:

"Going to GS gives you a guarantee entrance (PROVIDED you PASS ALL your classes to transfer)"

P.S. don't get so defensive, I'm not here to attack you.

I was referring to the statement that you automatically get into a different BU college following your two years at CGS. Transferring from an external school is not what I am talking about.

CGS students must obtain a certain GPA that is required by the school they want to transfer into. CAS is a 2.3, COM is a 2.5. I'm pretty sure...you can always call CGS directly and someone will be happy to talk to you-and I recommend the program. I'm there now, and you get the core curric. without having to fight for spots in classes.
