I was invited for an interview to the Case PPSP program next week. If I get into this program, do you think I should pass up the opportunity to go to Stanford. I know I want to be a doctor, but it's going to be hard to pass up an exp. at stanford...whay do you think

See msdoc's post...it may help in your decision making:

You got an offer for an interview today? Isn't that a bit late?

I dunno man...its Stanford......

PPSP. Great undergraduate school, with a top 20 medical school.

no, my invitation came in mid march, my interview is april 10th. Jabez, I would take it that you would go to the Case program?

I think I'm leaning toward the case prog if i get in, let's see if I can get in

Hey chanski-Best wishes on your interview!

thanks a bunch!

Yes, I would definately choose Case over Stanford. Though I turned down my Case interview/admissions, I believe that it is still a superior program in regards to its undergraduate experience and its medical school placements. Plus, post-med school it has seemingly high statistics as well. Best of luck!

Everytime I think of the choice b/t stanford and case ppsp, I think of spending 4 years in beautiful stanford, versus 8 years in cold cleveland...but then i think of the guaranteed med school, and...i just can't decide. I thought i was leaning toward the case thing...then i think of the warmth of cali.

Stanford. Believe me, I wish I was in your shoes; take Stanford over PPSP if you get in. It'll be a much richer, better experience for you, and really Stanford students do very very well in getting into med school. Grade inflation + stellar rep + opportunities for everything you want = Happiness = Chanski, M.D. ;)

Although PPSP is a great opportunity, you have to keep up a 3.6. I would rather do that at Stanford and take the MCAT. People will say PPSP is worth it over Stanford; I don't necessarily know. But my own opinion still stands. Stanford > Case PPSP.

Case PPSP > Stanford

Case e-mails PPSP results today

well, my decision, I believe, is made, for i did not get into ppsp...stanford, here i come. I'm sort of sad that i didn't get selected, but then i'm glad b/c i don't have to choose b/t the progms.

Sorry to hear that. Good luck and enjoy Stanford.

Too bad about Case PPSP, chanski. Best wishes at Stanford though. If I were in your shoes, I would have taken the other combined program (UIC).

may i ask why you would take the UIC program? just wondering.

Because I don't think that a Stanford degree will assure you a seat in any medical school. No great school can. I think that your chances are enhanced for the reasons listed by stanford-dude, ie grade inflation, prestige of university, etc. If you are certain of a career in medicine, why not go through UIC's program?

Of course, I give this advice without knowing much about UIC's program. I would need to know: Can you apply out for a different medical school and still retain your spot? Do you need to take the MCAT? What are the research/lab opportunities for students?

I am from California. And I do know a bit about Stanford, and about some of their premed students. After enduring the grueling premed curriculum and the stress of applying to med school, many are just happy to get into a medical school at all, regardless of its rank. Just don't think that Stanford will hand you a top tier medical school admission.

I say, go to UIC, be the shining star, and then try to get into Stanford for residency. Just my opinion...although, I must say that sunny California and Stanford's reputation are indeed enticing.

con't from ^

Oh yeah, I would also check the residency placement of UIC med school graduates and check the medical school placements of Stanford graduates in order to make an informed decision.

I've read somewhere that Stanford students do extremely well in med school placement.

If you are at Stanford you are very likely to get into a great school anyway. In a typical year, of the 300 premeds
or so at Stanford, about 20 go to UCSF, 20 will go to Stanford, and 5 each will go to Harvard, Yale, and Johns
Hopkins. Many of you will go to other excellent University of California and private schools. All but a handful of
you will get in the first time you apply. Relax. The success of past Stanford students like you is a better predictor
of your success than the sheer number of people who apply and enroll in medical school from around the country.
Moreover, you can get into the nations best residencies from an average medical school, providing you do well
there. Again, how you perform in medical school is far more important than which school you attend.

There you go, straight from Dr. McCullough, the director of the Quest Scholars program at Stanford. He knows quite a bit about premed there as he went to Stanford for college and UCSF for med school. Hope that helps and shows you that Stanford can prepare you very well for med school, wherever you desire to go.

One thing that should be said is that....while Stanford can give you great opportunities and a 'leg up' when applying to med school, YOU still have to work hard and make sure you do well in classes to maximize all the benefits there. Good luck; make your decision wisely.
