@murimin @2018clue will you be attending??

@kaec16, which state are you from? May be geographical preferences.

Hi @Winky1: This college admissions game been so random and unpredictable… My S was crushed last wk with his ED school rejection - he showed all the interests, did all sorts of visits, including coaches and admissions staff - his stats was at the upper 75th of the school - he was ready to get an accepted letter - then came the bad news, not even a defer. A total crush. Then, he got in CWR with a decent size of scholarship - it has been seen as his top 5 schools when he did the application. He knew it could be a difficult since we didn’t do the visits or interview (we are pretty far away). Just to show the kind of insanity out there. I think your D will get in, especially with the scholarship app. due. The stats are there, they maybe thinking your D could get “ED or EA” at another school and thus did what they did. Just give them a call, write a letter and express the school is your D’s top choice (if it is still really the case), then see what happens. The only thing my S did extra for CWR beyond the regular stuff needed on commonapp was the application for the Arts scholarship with a large portfolio submitted. I do think these extra stuff help to demonstrate interest. Since CWR does not require an extra essay, many high stats kids could just hit the submit button and admissions need to protect the yield. Who knows.

I got in with 25K, but it was for psych and bio so it wasnt as selective. It seems case is extremely selective for engineers but not much more for other programs

Thank you so much @Mickey2Dad. I am waking up still dismayed. I do not mean to diminish others acceptances. I just know my D is prepared and qualified. Perhas having need is a bigger deal this year because they are meeting demonstrated need? I am just still searching to make sense, but I need to stop that. She will continue chipping away at those scholarships and being the great kid and student that she is. Thanks.

And I forgot to say I’m sorry about your son’s rejection from his ED school, @Mickey2Dad. You just went through what we’re feeling, but it’s a deferral instead. I am glad he got into CWRU.

Hi @Winky1 CWR definitely is a need sensitive school. We can afford to chip in about 60% of the OOS total cost, and amazingly the scholarship money fill in the rest. I was in your shoes last week this time, totally bump out and felt “cheated” after all the nice things the other school admissions officer said to my son during the application. We were searching for answers and obviously nobody is going to tell us what went wrong. My son cried for 24 hrs and practically written the chance for CWR off (after he saw the blurp about status page). He wrote another 7 application essays over the weekend, and we are ready to submit those this week. Now we have to reconsider. I am sure your D will end up in a great place. If CWR is still the top choice, let admissions know, let them know she is applying for the scholarships as well. Good luck.

Has anyone been having issues contacting Case? I’ve sent out an interview request, heard no response, and then emailed them and heard no response. That was in October and November so I don’t know what the deal is. I was deferred too

Winky1 – Applying for the CWRU scholarships will certainly communicate to them that your D has a true interest in the school. Hopefully - she’ll get an even better scholarship as a result! Hang in there. A deferral is NOT a rejection. They are just asking you to show them the love! By the way, my older S attends CWRU and is a junior (Computer Science major) and is very happy.

My D got in with 1560 SAT (35 act equivalent) and 3.96 unweighted. Our school’s valedictorian and second in line who will both have outstanding chances elsewhere both got accepted. With less than 50% getting accepted in EA, and majority being rejected in RD, many many outstanding students will be deferred or rejected. Case is a selective school. As we got a deferral from a top prospective school last weekend, it was a difficult one. And no rhyme or reason. I’ve come to realize, when less than 1/2 the student applicants get in, the ones who don’t, are ALL incredible candidates…and we can’t fully understand the why. Majors, georgraphics, holding down jobs while in high school, volunteering, gender, race, and academics all impact decisions. But most students who apply are in the 30-36 act range, so this is who will get in AND who won’t. Soo many amazing kids; Congrats to those who got in, and best of luck to find the perfect school for those who are looking elsewhere. Ultimately, what the student does with where they are that will determine their future, as it has to this point.

I got accepted with WGPA:3.81 Act:30. I am not a US citizen and doesn’t live in the States. I never showed interest - no interview, no campus visit, not even a single email. Maybe I was selected cuz of my major was psych or my essay. I had a p.s. at the end of page mentioning about something that I wrote in the essay. Congrats to everyone who got in!

Is it normal to receive a financial aid package, complete with university scholarship, if you are deferred? Does that mean it’s what they’ll offer IF you are admitted RD?

Before my son finished 8th grade we were trying to decide which High school to send him to. Our choice was a prominent Catholic HS with tons of AP courses or a small rural school with 1 Honors and 1 AP, which would create the opportunity to attend Youngstown State Univ. via college credit plus. We called Case 4 years ago when he was still in 8th grade and they said they’d prefer college course work on a campus over an AP course. We chose the small rural school and he has completed 30 credit hours consisting of Chemistry 1&2, Calc 1, Psych, Sociology, Statistics, and English. He has a 4.0 at YSU and HS and has his Freshman year of college about done. He was even planning to retake everything if he was accepted at Case. What more do they want? We are deferred and confused.

On a side note, we have moved Cinci and OSU to the top of the stack. They just saved me a ton of cash! He’ll now have enough money leftover to buy a new car and a downpayment on a home after he graduates from college.

O-H…

Accepted with good scholarship! 1510 SAT 35 ACT 4.0 GPA UW
Attended two school visits with them and had good ECs
Really happy!
Congrats to all accepted and to those deferred: hang in there!!

@colleheguy2018, all I have to say is:

“-IO!!”

I have a son currently at OSU. Fabulous school.

Your story is incredulous to me. All the best to your son.

sorry, meant to tag @CollegeGuy2018 on my last post

Does finaid pack come separate with university scholarship?

@Winky1 - sorry to hear about your disappointment. I’ve seen your comments here and on the Wash U board as my son had a similar application pattern to your daughter’s to Wash U ED and Case EA. He was fortunate enough to be admitted to both. Just wanted to offer one suggestion - as you reach out to deferral schools to demonstrate continued interest, I would suggest having your daughter (rather than you) do the emailing and calling. Not sure if that will make a difference but could be worth a try.
