Case western reserve (accepted the offer) class of 2020

@cle4life Thank you so much! I positively consider to go Case!

When thinking about rankings of political science departments, one type of ranking is:

Alumni-based rankings

There are a couple of rankings based on the work of the alumni of a program. McCormick & Rice (1982; 2001) looked at whose graduates publish in five “leading journals” (a journal was leading if it was published by the national or one of the regional political science associations). Michigan, UC Berkeley, Chicago, Rochester and Indiana are the top 5. In a later study, Rice, McCormick & Bergmann (2002) looked at whose graduates publish books that had been reviewed at the flagship journal APSR. Harvard, UC Berkeley, Yale, Chicago and Princeton top that list (when weighed by size of the graduating class, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Case Western Reserve and UC Berkeley are at the top). Masuoka and Grofman look at which departments have produced the highest number of highly-cited faculty (determined by being in top 400 of all faculty). The top 5 are Harvard, Yale, UC Berkeley, Michigan, and Chicago. They also look at placement records (additional tables and figures) as such – the top 5 in 1991-2000 placements were Harvard, UC Berkeley, Michigan, Princeton, and Chicago.

We are visiting case for the overnight. DD wants to study nursing to be a Nurse Practioner. Hope all goes well.

@hope2achieve, DD and husband will be there as well - DD really wants to get a feel for the kinds of kids there, the work load and fun/work balance. This will make or break CWRU for her so we are all a bit nervous… Good luck!

@myjanda My DD is really hoping it goes well. We saw it and it seemed great. Overnight might settle it for us.

Looking forward to a full report!

Well we are choosing another school. My DD will be turning down the scholarship today. I loved the school and all the stuff around the school but she had a much better offer. Time to look forward now. I hope all enjoy the school.

Hope2achieve: Thanks for the update and Good Luck!

@EDxplorer Good luck to your son too. I am sure he will love it there.

Thanks.

We are looking forward to our S’s time in Cleveland. I’ll be honest and tell you that I was not thrilled with Cleveland when we drove in to our hotel a couple of nights before our official visit. However, visiting the campus was like being in a different city! It seemed very safe, diverse, and eclectic. Actually, the area around the university reminds me very much of Rice U. in Houston–the medical center is on one side and the museum district is on the other.

As of right now, he wants to double major in biology and either macromolecular engineering or materials science engineering. He has a lot of science interests so that may change, even before he starts his first semester! I have been told that the optional orientation week prior to the beginning of the fall semester is a “don’t miss” event and worth the few extra dollars. So he will be doing that as well.

@bigred93 what part of Cleveland did you stay in? Did you visit Downtwon, Tremont, Ohio City, and the Flats? Did you check out playhouse square, the West Side Market, and many other places? There are a lot of great, safe places to visit.

Could anyone check how many fresman registered for class of 2020 so wait list students have an idea if there is any chance for them? Thanks!

Accepted students have access to a map that updates every time a student registers. Right now, we are at 900 people exactly for the freshman class. If case would like to keep it’s current enrollment around 4,200, they need a minimum of 1,000 in the freshman class of 2015.

My daughter is an incoming freshman, and I do not think she has seen any map like this or anyway to see the total number of incoming students or where others are from. I wonder if they discontinued the map? Or maybe it is something they gain access to later? Sorry @weiba1014

My DD turned down her spot last week. Give them a call, they are really nice in the office there.

Hello, I am also an international student considering Case this year.

Although the university says it gives “limited financial aid” to international students, was your son able to receive financial aid?
Alternatively, do you know if international students there get $40,000+ in need-based aid?

Finance is a big concern for me in applying to US universities because I have to limit my annual college expenses to about $20,000, but I want to know if that is remotely possible in Case Western University

@akirasah
If you look in section H6 of the Common Data Set for CWRU:

international students were given aid: 40 out of 535

Average dollar amount of institutional financial aid awarded to undergraduate degreeseeking
nonresident aliens: ** $25,520 **

Just dropping by to say my D is finishing up her 7th semester at CWRU.
She loves CWRU!

@LanaHere can you let us know more specifics about what she likes or have her write something up that she would tell new students or prospective students?

Yes, I will today.
