[] Strengths: Test scores, hook
[] Weaknesses: Nothing was really over-the-top for me
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Looking at this thread, I really can’t say
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at UNC (Carolina Scholarship), Vanderbilt[/li][/ul]General Comments: $28,000/year University Scholarship. I’m really interested in Case’s BME program, so it’s definitely an option.

As a side note, I’m fairly sure “Demonstrated Interest” plays quite a major role in Case’s admissions decisions. Since it’s a free application and most universities are trying to improve yield and lower admissions rates, there’s probably some sort of box in your file for whether you’ve visited (I didn’t), whether you’ve made contact with a representative or attended an info session, etc.

You guys need to delete the spaces in [ *]… sorry I’m a little OCD about that

Case Western Reserve University admin process (yield protection) = Joke!

Western Reserve University ranked only #37 and waitlisted my D. My D already accepted by 3 other tops schools (with their rank < 20). Case Western Reserve University was our top choice.

Hello, I want my application fee back.

Waitlisted
SAT: 2060
GPA: 3.68

Did they reject anyone or is waitlisting the new rejection?

For those of you citing lack of demonstrated interested in Case Western as the reason for being placed on the waitlist, I’m curious as to how you would demonstrate interest in the first place. I didn’t see anywhere on the application where on would do so. I could imagine them waitlisting overqualified applicants, though.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2340 (M 800/R 740/W 800)
[] ACT:
[] SAT II: 800s for Math II and Physics
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Don’t know, school only gives weighted on 100-point scale (100.536)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/~200
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Stats (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Bio (two periods), AP Calc AB, AP Physics B, H Spanish V and a CP english course
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMF
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Track/XC year round (Captain, individual state champion)
[] Job/Work Experience: Working the computer timing at track meets
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteering at middle school meets
[] Summer Activities: Did a selective engineering camp at my local state school
[] Essays: Good, definitely my strength
[] Teacher Recommendation: At least one was likely excellent, I never read them
[] Counselor Rec: Never read it, but she liked me
[] Additional Rec:
[] Interview:
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): ME
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Nationally ranked public
[] Ethnicity: Iranian-American
[] Gender: Male
[]Income Bracket: High enough that our FA was laughable
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Stats were more then enough to get in, but not quite good enough that I’d get waitlisted
[] Weaknesses: Looks like I cruised through high school from my schedule, funnily enough that might have been what got me accepted. No demonstrated interest at all
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Waitlisted at Washington University at St. Louis yesterday, waiting on Harvey Mudd as well as some miscellaneous safeties[/li][/ul]General Comments: Was offered 30,000, which makes up for the fact that we got no aid. I’m definitely interested in attending Case but I’ll have to see if I get in at HMC and what I get at my other schools. Sorry to everyone who is suffering from the effects of Tuft’s Syndrome. On one hand I sympathize with Case’s efforts to improve their stats because, let’s face it, they deserve a lot more recognition. But I also think it’s a shame that so many excellent students get screwed over in the process.

@ryan From what my GC said, demonstrated interest could be as simple as having an interview, taking a registered visit (unofficial isn’t technically demonstrated), emailing the admissions office a question, or attending an online/in-person session. I don’t know how much of this specifically applies to Case, though.

@barcelotina, Case Western Reserve University was our top choice. Their admin team must have psychic readers. What else make them to think that even if we are accepted we won’t go.

LOL KLM - the application was free.

My son was also waitlisted.

It would appear that the free application really caused a problem this year. My son has reasonably high stats, not sky high. But, we went to East Coast schools and West Coast schools for college visits - the center of the country didn’t get hit - I was planning on taking him to visit if he was accepted.

So, it’s frustrating because it’s so difficult to tell where and if your child will be admitted that many families are “overapplying” - and it seems clear that a LOT of applications were because it was free, not because of true interest. If the school admitted based on perceived interest, it can hurt when it’s more than a thousand miles away from your home, it’s not like you could just pop in for a visit. Likely a “touch” would have helped (i.e. phone call to admissions, email, etc.).

For those who REALLY want to get in, the off-waitlist admissions number is not fully reliable. In 2010, 300/900; 2011, 400/900; 2012, 39 out of 1700. In part - this is being driven by the guaranteed housing for freshman issue. Last year, enrollment was unexpectedly high - nearly 1400 freshman up from about 900-1000 for the prior years.

Case, if you are listening… have an application fee that can be waived, but only if people have enough interest to find out that it can be waived - several schools have this set up already. This will avoid the “nuisance” applications - those being filed by people who clearly have no interest in applying (see post number 18).

@KD94025. LOL… It is not free. We applied through BS/MD program

@ryan - yeah, what Skeezey said.

I could have requested an interview/ sent in an update/ etc. But I didn’t know that Case takes into consideration - the interest shown(as I can now see on their CDS)!! So :/

KLM - Ah, well - I’m not sure how many people apply for the multiple degree programs…

Best of luck for your daughter.

Is anyone worried about getting into Case as a sign of not getting into an Ivy?

Sent from my LG-VM696 using CC

On the contrary, I’m worried that not being accepted to Case is a sign that I won’t get into any schools better than it. :/

^ I reiterate Lrdwhyt’s sentiments. I’m shocked that I was waitlisted. I was given Regents at Irvine, LA, and Berkeley.

I’m extremely worried about Ivy decisions that come out soon.

Accepted with 23k scholarship! Post stats later…

^ However, looking at the epidemic of “Tuft’s syndrome,” it seems as though those getting waitlisted at Case have the high test scores/GPA, etc.

I am also extremely worried about those decisions.

First off, congrats to all those gaining acceptances. I’ve interacted a lot with Case over the past decade and there is a lot very positive about what is going on there. And having lived in NE Ohio for a long time, I would encourage those giving strong consideration to Case to look at the area with an open mind instead of all the sterotypes (snow, rust belt, Lebron left - sigh).

DS is part of what looks like a long list of very qualified candidates who were Waitlisted and I too was a bit baffled.

33 ACT 4 APs with a couple of 5’s under his belt, 3.8, very strong ECs, etc.

Must admit he applied very last minute and the fact that we live 30 minutes away and he has never visited was probably not good. Planned to attend Open House on Pres. Day but had wrestling practice.

He already has Honors Engineering acceptances to U of Illinois and Ohio St. and is waiting on the usual suspects for decisions at the end of the month.

I just question Case’s strategy. They literally bombarded the kid with email and mail for months up to the last minute, made the app free, so he finally took the step to send off an app thinking he was in the top 25% from a stats perspective. Even though they would likely be down his list, he would have visited and considered Case if accepted. Not going to happen now.

Also, I’m not sure how much I would read into other school’s decisions if you were WL at Case. Every school has their own strategy around yield, etc.

Again, good luck to those accepted, and for those waiting till the end of the month - hang in there.
