This is my first year here but I'm on waitlists for on-campus dorms and coops which don't move at all so this place is my ultimate, last resort.

My main concerns are:
-the high price point when you add everything in (app fee, internet, parking, upgraded furniture, unlimited meals, i hope that's it because I can't handle anymore fees). I estimate everything to be ~$12,000 for the whole year, double occupancy

-maintenance/utilities/flooding/water issues/noise/druggies

-safety of my sister's car in the parking garage

All of which are lacking according to the reviews.

Should I go ahead with Castillian or is it a BIG mistake?
What's your honest experience/opinion/advice?

Thanks and hook 'em!!!

I think you should probably wait for UT dorms. Last year, the Housing dorm/room assignments came out around middle of July. They maybe process the wailting list after the assignments posted.

Parking is expensive in or off campus at UT. Do you really need a car? You can save some money if you don’t have a car there.

What you’re about to spend is roughly the same as a single dorm at Dobie. I agree - don’t bring a car unless you really really need it. There are a lot of great bus systems that go all over austin that you can use. Just be more selective in what you’re paying for. If money is an issue - is upgraded furniture a necessity?

As for quality, I’ve lived there for 3 summers and honestly, it’s not much different than any other dorm. I wouldn’t say it has any inherent deal breakers.

Dobie just filled up and now I have to find a new place to live. I was thinking about moving in the castilian, but how did you get $12000? Room is $8900 (unlimited meal) + $1050(parking) + $450 (application fee) is $10400. How much does it costs for internet anyway? also how much is the upgraded furniture? I can’t find anything about those two things on their site.

I don’t think the Castillian is worth it. Toured there and had a couple of friends who’ve stayed there and didn’t really like it. So expensive as well. Try to get an apartment in West Campus that’s close and that’ll still be cheaper than Castillian/Dobie.

I was also looking at the Quarters apartments, but the only thing is, I kinda want a meal plan and a furnish place is a bonus. Do you have to recommended apartments I should look at?

Almost no complex will offer a furnished place and a meal plan besides the outside dorms such as Dobie/Castillian/Towers. Just go to Ikea/Walmart for your furniture and eat outside along the Drag and that’ll be much cheaper. Also, go find any realtor (free) and use him to find a place for you by touring many apartments/condos. I recommend some places like Orange Tree, Centennial, etc. in West Campus. What is your budget?

My budget is around $900 a month, so it is pretty reasonable. I heard that any place except the west side of campus is considered to be dangerous, is this true? I will check out the prices and I will be in Austin tomorrow, so I will check out some apartments. Thanks.

Dangerous? I live in Austin. The area north of campus is not dangerous (there is some crime, even in west campus). There are apartments off of Far West which are in a nice area of town. Maybe Riverside might have higher crime.
