Castillian vs. Dobie

I'm looking into signing a lease for a single room at either the Castillian or Dobie sometime in the next few days. I've stayed at both dorms over the summer through middle and high school for various camps, and they seem pretty comparable. I know that they're still college dorms, and are probably not going to be exactly luxurious, but I need to find a way to choose between them pretty quickly.
What do you all think? I'm not so much looking for a party center, I'm basically just interested in a room with functioning utilities and decent building management.

Well, I don’t know much about Castillian but Dobie is closer to the heart of campus and I have many friends there who find it to be decent.

You’re a freshman, right?

The Castilian and Dobie are the two most popular private on-campus dorms for freshmen. They’re pretty much equal in most aspects. I live in the Castilian, and there were a lot of problems with the basic facilities last semester. The hot water seldom worked, and sometimes the water throughout the dorm room wouldn’t work at all. I think this might have been due to construction maintenance, but I’m not sure. Either way it was annoying at the beginning of the semester. Those problems did seem to clear up toward the end of the semester though.

My biggest complaint with the Castilian is the hours of the cafeteria. They’re really weird!! It closes at 7 pm, so a lot of people who have late classes can’t even eat! It also closes throughout the day, so you can really only eat during the hours it’s open. I don’t understand why they don’t just keep it open from early in the morning until like 10 pm and let you eat whenever you want. That makes more sense to me. I’m not sure how the Dobie meal plans work, but I do know that they have a nice food court with many different restaurants.

Overall, the Dobie and the Castilian are pretty much the same thing.

Neither. check out [College Houses Cooperatives: Student Owned and Student Run](http://www.collegehouses.org) My son lives in Taos. 24 hour kitchen privilges. 17 or so meals a week. He’s got a private room and it is HUGE and a bargain. He can’t imagine living anywhere else. If you are a prince or princess, please choose somewhere else to live. There is a 6 hour a week work requirement (yeah, you’ll have to get your hands dirty). He has met a lot of great students there from all over the world. The elite will self select out of this house, so you can avoid living with entitled snobs.

Functioning utilities and decent building management? Yeah do the Co-ops.
I second eaglemom10’s suggestion!!
