Most of the best essays I have read begin with a short, catchy opening sentence. I liked this at first. The style appeals to me. Now, after having seen it quite a few times, I'm worried that this approach may have become cliche. Thoughts?

I was wondering the same thing. I’d rather get to the point.

If your opening sentence would really hook the reader, then I would keep it, regardless of whether it is “cliche”. However, if it is overly dramatic, then I would steer clear from that. Like talibah said, I would just make sure you get to the point- so long as your opening doesn’t drag on and on. I recommend you have people read your opening and base it off of their opinions, along with your own.

Cheesy openings can be effective, and with limited space, it may be worth it to use something to the point.
