Does anyone know anything about the musical theater program at Catholic University of America in Washington DC? I haven’t seen a link for that school?

There have been some posts about this program. To find them go to the “Musical Theater Major” page - click on “Search this Forum” (on the right of the page) and type in “Catholic” - you will get links to a number of threads - scroll down and you will find some info specifically about the program and their audition.

I can offer a small amount of insight. My D is currently doing a summer dinner theatre in Montgomery County, MD, a suburb of DC. Her show director and choreographer (one person) plus the music director are Catholic MT faculty members. I am highly impressed. In addition, quite a few of the actors/singers/dancers in the show are Catholic U MT students.

The faculty members are dynamite. Very professional yet very nurturing and encouraging. Caliber of the show is extremely high and much of the cast is made up of college-age students.

There is representation from MT programs at Syracuse (my D), CUA, Michigan, Elon, Miami, NYU and also Northwestern (theatre), Hartford, Kent State, Ithaca, Muhlenberg, Shenendoah, McDaniel, American and a few others.

They have done 2 shows this summer. Lead female role (Sally) cast in Cabaret was a CUA MT student; lead male (Chad) cast in All Shook Up was a CUA MT student. In fact, all of the CUA students (several have other principal roles) are good and are very strong singers.

So while I did not know a lot about CUA when my D applied there, I have a newfound respect for the program based on the faculty members I have come to know as well as the student talent.

As a Mom who has gone through the whole audition process with her D, I would urge parents and students who might be interested to give this school a very close look. As I have posted on earlier CUA threads, another thing I know for sure is that CUA grads get cast in a LOT of DC productions and DC’s theatre scene is STRONG AND VIBRANT. Signature Theatre (this year’s regional theatre Tony winner) and Arena Stage (also a past Tony winner) cast CUA kids frequently. Ditto for certain shows at the Kennedy Center, Olney Theatre (regional theatre in MD) and the Shakespeare Theatre (Michael Kahn, AD).

I’m liking it more and more.

Just note that this is a BM degree; not a BFA. My oldest auditioned and was accepted (way back in 2002)…we enjoyed our visit there. She ultimately chose another school but it was more about the expense than anything else.

Yes, sorry, it is indeed a BM. I lumped those programs all together. My D was accepted there as well into the Rome School of Music but declined because it was too close to home!!
