Caught Lying On App

what are the consequences of being caught lying on the application?

Is it just auto-reject or is there more?

Does Harvard do the same thing as any other college if it catches people lying?

Why ask? Just don't lie. It's not a good habit for the most part...esp on an application. Any application for that matter.

er I know, i would never do it. I was just curious as to what would happen.

if u did lie, what would the lie be?...if it's not a huge thng, i guess it wont be a huge deal(that is if they dont find out!), and it wont help u get in either.
But if the lie is about sthng that is decisive for your application, then i guess they'd somehow make sure u actually did the thng...know what i'm saying?/
and anyways, if there's no mention of the WOW thngs u lie about in your recs and schl report, etc, then they'll be suspicious i think..

Why even post a thread on the consequences of lying?

Hey, we're all curious. Let's be open minded for purely research purposes. It's like considering how one could scientifically destroy the universe. Nobody will in their right minds do it, but we are a naturally curious species.

Neither is anyone capable of destroying the universe...

We're capable of destroying human civilization. To our minds, that is the universe.

lol :) (10 char)

ok back to the topic: i dont think they actually try to find out if u lied or something; i mean i'm sure u guys know about this girl that murdered her mom, and didnt say that on her harvrd app, and she got in!!harvd admitted her and then later rescinded the offer. Did they find out themselves or did someone alert them to it??

Harvard is not interested in enrolling liars. And they don't distinguish between big and little lies. They specifically state in their literature that if you lie on your app you will be rejected. If the lie is not detected until after you enroll, you will be turned out. If the lie is not detected until after you graduate, your degree will be rescinded and all your credits cancelled. Can they be any plainer than that?

You can also read about how Yale expelled a student after finding out that he had forged his transcripts from the community college he had transferred from- even though he was academically successful in his time at Yale.

so there u go: dont lie on your apps!
eg. our schl paper's news editor said on her apps that she's the co-chief editor, when we actually dont have "co-editors". not a big thing, but the college can expel her based on this lie. anyways, i dont think this lie is going to move her app to the admit pile,,so i dont know y she's even taking the risk.

There's more to it.

I heard they use Iron Maidens and other medieval torture devices on the liars.

Don't Do it.

I am hoping they tar and feather you AND make you go to community college after a gap year.

Lying about ECs are just plain stupid. There's no point of putting "co-editor." I mean seriously, is Harvard going to accept you because of that?

On the other hand, should we distinguish between resume inflating and lying? Both have deceitful purposes, but no concrete examples come to mind.

there's really no point in lying... if it's something significant to your app, they can easily find out and auto reject you. if it's not, then it's not going to get you admitted anyway. so don't lie

JP, marry me. XD

ooooo, a marriage proposal during a discussion about lying...
i can see THAT divorce coming...:D
So, about resume inflating...my college counselor has assingned me the position of Coordinator for an international relations mentorship that I am in, which is basically discussions and debates about issues with ambassadors and consuls from round the world, but I still havent really done anything coordinate-like,, apart from contacting the consulates....is that considered to be bad, could it be detrimental and does the fact that my counselor assignmed me to that position count???

I'm not sure anyway
