dont worrya bout it

I got caught cheating once last year in French. My teacher liked me so much tho that she didn't turn me in, punish me, or even give me a 0 on the quiz I cheated on. It spooked me out enough tho, that I completely stopped. I'm extremely lucky.

sue the school. its not a solution, but as you said Y was put in a destuctive environment where he could be rewarded for his achievements. what a sticky situation.

"I have copied so many assignments from him, but I have seen him copying other peers' hw just twice during hs. He certainly didn't cheat, so I don't think he has a problem with academic integrity"

But colleges sure would think he does. Letting someone copy one's homework = lack of integrity = cheating. Copying others' homework = cheating, lack of integrity.

Sounds like despite being caught, your friend still hasn't learned his lesson when it comes to cheating.

All cheating is obviously wrong. What I see as part of the problem is the nonuniform way cheating is handled. According to my son, in his hs., sometimes teachers turn away, ignoring it, even though they know what they saw is not right. At times there is a minimal punishment like a 5 point deduction on the assignment, (nothing that could not be made up on an extra credit assignment a couple of weeks later), other times it is lower grade for the marking period, a zero on the assignment, detention, in school suspension. At times parents are called in. These are mixed messeges. Plainly, all of it is cheating.

I agree with Adad he may need some additional help.

You make it sound like Ivies are all about grades/SATs. No its about character too. Colleges want to admit people who WILL prosper on campus, not get good grades and cheat and thereby taint the institution's reputation and name.

That is why this is very important and your friend is in a tough situation. Yes, people should be allowed to redeem themselves but we're talking about Ivies, there are soo many applicants with perfect scores and no disciplinary actions that they could choose from.
