Cavalier Computers?

Sooo ...

.... what's the deal with these people? Ordered a laptop some six weeks ago, and they sure charged the charge card right away. But it hasn't arrived yet, and a visit to them resulted in a disinterested "Uh, I don't know when it will be here, they're backed up, I don't know how to check on the order, it'll be here when it gets here." Roommate had the identical experience - no notebook, and a similar "Don't know, don't care" response from the girl at the counter.

I can get the same notebook from Lenovo in a week. Is this company reputable? Competent? Is this "normal", and I have nothing to be concerned about, or should I dispute the charge with my credit card company? Because the only other time I had an experience like this, where the company couldn't even track the order, but repeatedly assured people it was "in the mail", the company went bankrupt, and a lot of people were ripped off.

Wish I'd asked those questions before I ordered ... :(

I can only give our experience to date. My daughter’s computer/printer/cables etc came several weeks ago, order having been placed in June. Everything is working fine and packing was good.

The bookstore experienced a loss of data, they tell me, when a Super Cell Storm came through late June: this caused manual backup, calls for Credit cards, and general slowness expected when such a large student computer store data is loss.

Our second order was for the fridge combo and some fans: here too a second call came in for credit card number (ordered it online). This bothered me so I spoke up: they say for some reason my online order charge didn’t go through. I called my CC company to verify the lack of original charge.

I think Cavelier Computers is a tad understaffed and overworked due to the above. The managerial seem interested in correcting problems, so I’d give a call into them. The phone answerers I’m told are students/hires without the general knowledge the managers had.

Having just spent three days cleaning up from a Super Cell storm, I empathize with the bookstore. Let’s hope they back up all information from now on to avoid loss of data, dates, and having to call ( few people like to re-give CC info over the phone to an unknown voice).

I vote they publicize their 1-800 number too to keep costs down for students.

Good luck.

I ordered my computer from them 4 years ago. It came the day before I left for UVA (late August). Just be patient. The storm was horrible, it knocked out the entire town’s power, traffic lights and post office and everything, for at least 2 days.

Yes to both. They do have a small staff and they serve the entire university community from their little store inside the bookstore.

Pictures from the storm…

Ok, thanks everyone - I wasn’t aware they were hammered by the storm, and I can see how this would’ve negatively impacted them. It’s just that orientation started today, and it would’ve been nice to have the new laptop …

If they haven’t shipped it yet, you should go over to Cav Computers directly, tell them you are here for orientation (you’ve moved in already right?) and tell them just to call you when it is at the bookstore and you can pick it up. That would save you some time…

Squiddy- S1 received his computer (a Lenovo) a couple of day ago . Everything is running great, and software was installed as promised
Not too sure which Ethernet cable to get , apparently there are 2 different kind

Dean J - Great pictures. Thanks for posting them.
We were on site for orientation that week-end , and it was a pretty impressive storm. The orientation staff did an outstanding job given the circumstances :)
