Yay! Welcome both of you. I’m actually really excited now that I’m a semifinalist…it seems much more real.
@petitlion I totally understand. I have these random moments throughout the course of the day where I begin to visualize Germany and have to pinch myself because I’m so excited!
@jakobw Wow, that’s awesome! Ironically, the only 4 things I know how to say in German are hello, apple, Germany, and catfish… :-" Something tells me I couldn’t exactly hold a conversation with my “extensive knowledge” of Deutsch! The language camp would definitely be a big help if I’m selected.
@schnuff3 that would just add to the great experience you’d have! Going from 4 words to fluent in another language is definitely something you’ll be proud of and remember forever.
I can’t wait to see if you all get the scholarship!

Do you guys know which org/orgs have the language camp? I know CIEE does, but is it the only one?

@Jakobw Totally. So, I’m curious, are your parents ethnic German? My Uncle served in Germany before the Berlin wall fell, and married a German woman. When they returned to the U.S. with their children they had to become citizens again.
@schnuff3 yep! I have no American in me whatsoever. That’s why I’m not a US citizen. I’d love to do YES or NSLI-Y, but sadly I can’t because US citizenship is a requirement. 
There’ll be more opportunities to come along the road though!
@jakobw That’s really funny! Is there a reason why they moved to the U.S.A? (Germany’s economy is pretty strong.) My aunt wants to move back to Germany soon because she misses it so much. You could also apply to rotary too!
I just received an email saying I’m a Semi-Finalist?!! How exciting is that!
I just found out that I’m a FLAG semi-finalist!!! I’m so excited!!! But, now I have to worry about my interview. It’s in 3 weeks
Now, I’m really nervous about my interview!!! What do you think is good interview attire? What did you guys (if you were already interview) wear? What are you guys (if you haven’t been interviewed yet) going to wear?
I have that same question! I’m so nervous too! It’s nice to find another F.L.A.G applicant semi-finalist. We should keep in touch on Facebook incase we ever make it as finalist! We could potentially meet each other
And I was reading some suggested tips from alumni and their blogs:
Don’t dress casual, wear decent attire like Khakis and a button up shirt with some nice shoes. After all, this IS their first impression of us. If you’re female, a nice dress (THAT GOES PAST THE KNEES) and some flats or one inch heels (NOT STILLETOS) or some dressy pants and a nice shirt… Be professional. Some do take note of this and they do evaluate you as soon as you walk in through that door for the interview.
We have to make ourselves stand out; they have so many other semi-finalist. I’m sure they don’t want to hear the some old same old. Be unique, and make sure you take a moment to think about the questions they ask before you answer.
Don’t be fake, Wendy (previous CBYXer) mentions that they asked her questions like,
“If you could be one animal, which would it be and why?”
Don’t give a dumb answer like “A chameleon because they blend in and adapt well.” Get a more in-depth unique answer.
Try not to practice anything because you never know what they will ask.
And also, interact with other semi-finalist when you arrive, remember there IS someone usually observing.
It’s nice to socialize anyways!

What city are you interviewing in? (I’m not a stalker, I’m just hoping that maybe we are interviewing in the same city, because then maybe we’ll see each other at the interview)

That’s so cool!!! My interview is at the Los Angeles Airport on March 10th too! But, my interview is @ 2:00 PM. Maybe we’ll see each other when I’m leaving and you are arriving for your interview!!! It would be great to see someone I’ve met before there (even though we have barely met). haha

Sorry if this is weird- I’ve never used College Confidential before but I’ve been following this thread for a couple weeks (desperately searching for anything CBYX related). I just got a FLAG semifinalist notification over the weekend too and thought I could commiserate with y’all. I replied confirming that I would be at my interview but haven’t heard anything back, do you think they’ll give us more information? And do either of you know how many semifinalists were chosen? :S i’m so nervous!
