@linzyh Anything works really, I guess we’ll wait on for @dizzy99
I tried to make the Facebook group but it requires me to invite people to join and I’m not actually friends with anyone on Facebook who also applied to CBYX FLAG… yet! @Kendallanon If you wanna friend me on Facebook we can get the group started, or if you don’t want to that’s okay too- just let me know and I’ll send you my name through PM
@dizzy99 and @KendallAnon do you know how easy it is for people to see information about you on facebook? I want to create an account for CBYX, but I want my privacy. Are there good privacy settings?
@linzyh Yeah! you can set all your settings to private so that nobody you aren’t friends with can see information about you! That’s how I have it on my account.
@linzyh We just made the group so if you decide to make a Facebook account, let me know and I can add you!
I’m making a facebook account right now, I’ll PM you both with my info
Yay! I’m a member!
@linzyh & @dizzy99 Do they want the host family letter in German? I hope not but just assumed because it begins with
“Liebe Gastfamilie.”
@KendallAnon I don’t know a lick of German so I hope not!
@dizzy99 somebody ask!
Amanda replied to me. She said that 75 people will be interviewed for the FLAG region. 50 people will get accepted, and the number of alternates is based on the number of qualified applicants. She also said that the Partnership International Application should be emailed to her. I just wanted to let you all know
@linzyh We have a really good chance! Thank you so much for asking Lauren! It definitely gave me more hope! We have made it pretty far
I’m unsure what she meant by ‘qualified applicants?’
So basically we have a 1/3 chance of getting into the program.
Actually, we have a 2/3 chance of getting in. But, we could still get in as alternates too. and, I don’t know what she means by “qualified applicants” either
@linzyh
I think I understand what she means by “qualified.” Let’s say about 65 applicants are interviewed and they all demonstrate that they are good candidates for this scholarship… They can’t choose everyone?
So they pick out the ‘best ones’ (though all are good) and leave the rest for alternates. I see now
Wow, guys - 75 people get interviews. The chances of getting in are amazing! There were 11 CBYX-ers interviewing in my region of AFS and probably 2 or 3 will get the scholarship
So, the interview -
-You will mostly likely (unless FLAG does it very differently) have an individual and a group interview. In the AFS region, I think they are weighted equally.
-For the individual interview, definitely look up some practice interview questions. Don’t memorize your responses, but give some thought as to what you may respond. Be prepared to answer why you want to go on exchange, why you want to go to Germany, and be prepared for some situational questions.
-Think about the questions before you respond, don’t feel rushed. I told my interviewer a couple of times, “Hmm, let me think about that for a second” (paraphrasing hehe), but definitely don’t feel rushed.
-Group interviews are important! It’ll likely be some fun group activity, and make sure you talk and participate. They want to see how you work with and relate with others. DON’T be pushy or try to “take the reins”. Too many people trying to lead a group activity can be disastrous hehe.
-Dress formally. You will look more professional and feel more confident. I wore suit pants, a suit jacket, and a nice shirt.
-Chat with the other semifinalists in the waiting room/between activities.
thanks @evan241! I really appreciate the insight. I was so curious about how the interview was going to go. Good luck! I’m sure you’ll get in! I really hope you do
Thank you @evan241
@KendallAnon I actually haven’t had my interview yet (it’s next weekend), but when I do, I’ll come back with the details!
Hi everyone! I’m currently a semi-finalist for CBYX, and really glad I found this thread. I’m also I finalist for NSLI-Y (Moscow, Russia.) I’m feeling very conflicted and have to accept or deny the scholarship by this friday.
