CBYX 2018-2019!!!

Hey guys, I’m in the AFS region. I was selected as an alternate last year and I’m reapplying this year! I’m finally starting my application now that my college apps are in. I’m a junior this year but I’m graduating a year early, so if I get CBYX I’ll defer from college. Obviously I wasn’t a finalist, but I’d still be happy to offer advice since I’ve already been through the whole application process. Good luck to everyone!

Thank you all for your advice. Is anyone attending the webinar on Wednesday? Hopefully some of the info there will sway my parents too. My application is almost done!

How competitive is the FLAG region?

@theoriginalbrown I’ve heard it’s the least competitive

@theoriginalbrown FLAG isn’t as competitive as AFS or CIEE ,but it does include cities like Los Angeles and Houston. I attended the online applicant orientation for FLAG and according to that, there is about a 1 in 3 chance of being accepted to CBYX in the FLAG region.

Hey I’m new to this… I’m in the middle of applying to CBYX and I’m freaking out. Iw ant to go so bad but I feel like there are sooooo many other applicants that are better qualified!

I’m in AFS and I’ve heard it is so competitive. Anyon have any tips on to to make your profile stand out?

I would also like to know where he got his teacher recommendations from

@kclare22 Make sure you put a lot of effort into your essays and host family letter, as those are the ways the selection committee will know who you are as a person. Oh and also your activities/hobbies section.

@eddiepompa if you’re talking about me I have had some teachers in the past, and I have some teachers/leaders/etc from my extracurricular activities as well. Right now I have my public speaking teacher and my chorus director writing in recommendations, and a had a request to a librarian I’ve worked with (I volunteer at a library) to fill one out, but since I hadn’t gotten a response back from her I picked my chorus director.

I’m writing my host family letter and have stumbled across a slight problem. As a trans, specifically genderfluid, person I feel that my host family should know about my gender and be aware of it when choosing me. However there is the potential that I get turned down by families because of it, or get placed in an unsupportive family if I don’t mention it. I’ve already mentioned in my application my gender and I know the host family gets to see the full application. I’ve done a extensive web search but all I can find for LGBT applicants is the generic “Some countries are safer than others” Any suggestions?

@Zimthefedorable CBYX seems to make a strong effort to match people with the most compatible host families. If you mentioned it in your app, I think you should be ok. Anyone that would turn you down for something like that is definitely not someone you would want to be staying with anyway. If you do end up with an unsupportive host family, it is possible to change to a different one. But that’s a relatively rare solution since they try to find the best family for you from the start.

Hey guys! There’s a CBYX applicant group chat on Facebook Messenger. If you’d like for me to add you, shoot me a message!

Ayee! Please add me. My facebook profile is clio smith.

The application deadline for FLAG is coming up soon! Submitting my application today

Well, I felt the need to say something since I haven’t in a while. Thank goodness for that extension, I’ve spent wayyyy too long rereading the same few essays and I would have been so stressed to get it in tonight while needing to two-fifths of the book we were assigned; I feel like teachers try to shove two weeks work of extra content into the two weeks before winter break, especially since they aren’t allowed to assign homework over the break in my county.

I’m a little sad us CIEE (and AFS) kids only got an extension until the 18 while FLAG for until January 16, I believe. I’m not complaining, though, I’ll literally take any extension they’re willing to give us XD. I just felt the need to give thanks to the people behind CBYX that decided on this!

I got my application submitted a month-ish ago, so now all that’s left is to wait and find out if I’ve made it to the interviews. I live in Florida so I’m with CIEE. I saw something about a Facebook messenger group chat, and I would love to be added! My Facebook name is Marli Watson. Thanks!
