suze's comments are brutally honest as usual, and I believe true, to a certain extent. But, as many have pointed out before, those "hooked" (Dev, URM, Leg, Ath, etc.) make up roughly one half of the population of the admitted students.

So if that's true, my question is thus. What is the equally simple explanation for how the other half gets in?

As to the original intent of the thread, I agree w/those who have said that adcoms are really the only people who can say for sure, but I also agree w/those who say that half of the chances stuff is just for fun.

It's quite simple who the other half are (and mathmatically need to be) people with stats in the 75% and above with exceptional ECs. If anything can slip, it's the ECs (they are not quantifiable and wxceptions can be made), but the schools need the scores to keep raising their averages to maintain their rankings.

But let's be honest, folks -- does it really even matter? If it bothers you so much, well... nobody's holding a gun to your head and forcing you to read these threads.

Note: If somebody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to read this thread, then I sincerely apologize for my earlier statement.

Why don't we compare predicted chances to actual acceptances of the same appilicant? Maybe that can help us a little in determining whether or not these forums are some what accurate. Ultimately, opinions by CCers aren't valid; they're all based on personal opinion and/or experience.

Personally I think half of the statistics are ********.

GPA is totally unreliable considering the different weighting system
And everyone comes from a 'competitive highschool'...
And no one knows who well the person's essays are

I disagree completely. I NEVER would have applied to Northwestern (and consequently been accepted and decided to attend) if it hadn't been for the excellent advice of Alexandre. I was looking at schools like Miami, Boston University and DePaul. He assured me I could do better.
