Like many others, I have to ask - am I missing something or how is it indicated that there is a new post in a particular thread since my last visit? And why don’t the thread lists show date and time of last post, which would be a clunky but possible alternative to bolding/starring/whatever?
OK, never mind, I’m now seeing the (not very obvious) difference in shading between read and unread threads, and also the last post column … but honestly, why go for subtle with those indicators? It may make the site look sleeker but it sure decreases usability.
I would be relatively happy if they changed the background color, increased the font size and deepened the shading on read and unread threads. I can live with the rest and am sure if will get easier as we go along. Since so many posters agree on the above noted suggestions, can we get some feedback on whether any of that might happen?
If you are using a browser you can increase the font size yourself.
On Firefox <ctrl>+ or View->Zoom->Zoom in to increase the size. If you set View->Zoom->Zoom Text Only, then zooming in increases only the font size and leaves the graphics alone.</ctrl>
Internet Explorer is similar.
Don’t know about the mobile app, I don’t use it.
As one of the oldest of the oldtimers who still occasionally drops in an often monitors threads in a couple of specific fora, I have to agree with bomerr: waaaay too much white. I used the “Classic” display of CC for a reason. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of navigation and some other things but I’ll bet $20 (where do I send the check if I’m wrong, Roger?) that this “design” never had a usability study. It just has things glopped together in blocks; it’s the difference between hiring an architect and just having a contractor sketch lines on scratch paper. Aside from the excess of white and lack of contrast, there aren’t enough quick visual cues to distinguish content from ads.
I have asked a number of others to search for my PMs. They have had NO LUCK finding the hundreds of PMs (previously deleted), but do see three visitor messages I received. I would ask anyone…please let me know if you can see my PMs.
Please get the report posts function fixed. There are some newbies who are being abundantly rude…or posting erroneous information. I would imagine it helps the moderators to get post reports.
I fail to see why I would need EVERY PM I’ve sent since 2004, but I am unable to search past posts before I respond to a poster. These past posts very often gave a good context for responding.
Thumper, you can see someones past posts by clicking on their user name, which takes you to their profile page, and once there, clicking on “replies.”
Pretty sure “visitor posts” were always visible. Very different from seeing someone’s PM’s. But my iphone/ipad app no longer works - well, it loads but when you click on the thread, it’s an error message. But I am very serious when I say if you can just randomly post someone’s post to facebook, I will be sad, but I will be gone. I don’t log in with facebook and this was a place where there was some measure of anonymity. Look at it this way, if you arent friends with me on Facebook you can’t share my posts…so why on earth would it make sense that random people could share your posts to fb??? Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever except for YOU to ge more traffic or clicks to your site. If you care more about building new users than you do about your current ones, fine. But I know quite a few who won’t be posting any more if the risk to do so is to land on FB via a rando stranger.
maybe I never knew about visitor posts versus Private messages…hmmmmm
I’m not on facebook so, I just log on without…obviously. I agree, the privacy and annonymity is what is nice about this site. For adults and the kids.
Are there any plans to bring back new post indicators (like the yellow dots) on the Alphabetic List of Colleges page? This was always my first stop to see if there was activity for the dozen schools my son applied to.
Is anyone addressing the Facebook issue? This feels like such a breech of privacy and of CC understanding that many need to have the option of opting out. Many posters do not use Facebook to protect themselves due to their profession. This was to be a safe and different kind of place.
The forums work for me in IE but not in Firefox. I’ve tried clearing cookies, turning off Adblock, logging out and back on, but keep getting the full page “sorry, we’re down” message in the forums (not on the main page though). Any suggestions?
^ I cleared all of the collegeconfidential.com and talk.collegeconfidential.com cookies, closed all of the CC tabs, and then restarted Firefox.
After that FF worked for me.
I still cannot get CC on my internet explorer…but, an IT guy told me it’s because the computer I was using hasXP and it no longer supports the “newer” windows and internet explorer upgrades…so, it may be why I have to use Google Chrome or FF…???
^ Just tried IE8 on my computer, which is running XP sp3. Seems to work fine.
^^ Your computer is doing you a favor. Switch to chrome.
hmmmmm…my computer is dying…
@notrichenough, thank you for the suggestion but it didn’t work. I cleared all collegeconfidential cookies in Firefox, closed and reopened the browser, and am still able to log in to the site but when I go to the forums I get the following message:
We’re sorry, College Confidential is currently unavailable.
I’m sorry you’re not able to access our awesome site. We’re under the hood making some adjustments
and creating more cool things for you to use. We’ll be back soon. Thanks for your patience.
I’m typing this in IE which works fine for the entire site including forums, but would prefer to be in Firefox. Anyone else, or any admins, encountering this same problem?
Running IE 9.0.15 and Firefox 26.0 in Windows 7 Home 64-bit, if that matters.
Empty your cache.
^^ No luck, but thanks anyway.
