The forums are back up, but our tech folks are still working furiously to get everything working perfectly. For now, you may get errors (503 error, or Over Capacity) and not all functions may work for you. Hang in there!
Also, one suggestion - please use the new forums for a little while before announcing your extreme displeasure or requesting changes. The things you are looking for may be in a different place, or may have different (but not worse) functionality.
I realize that change is sometimes necessary, but is there a way to get back my most used feature: Go to the old control panel and see which of my subscribed threads have new posts? And to go right to the new posts?
I realize it is bad form to reply to yourself, but maybe this will help others…
Bookmarks == subscribed threads;
the post new count is the gray button with a number of new…
And to get past the guru mediation issue, I cleared my cache in chrome.
But this or some other forum issue caused each thread to be marked “unread” Easy enough to go the last page and work backwards to what you have not seen.
Going forward, I think I like the look. I always like the more white than anything else look. I’ll let the rest sink in for a while. I definitely like the auto-save draft issues
We are actually working on a tutorial that should be available shortly (not sure of exact timeframe, but within a day or two I’d say). The quote function has been a debated topic for years on the forum. Here is discussion around this from a few years back, and explains why we don’t plan on having this feature…
Thread subscriptions will probably receive some tweaks in the coming days and weeks. On the new site, any thread you bookmark (by clicking the star icon next to the thread title) will generate notifications when a new post has been made. Your control panel can be accessed by clicking your username. Once on the profile you will see a Notifications link on the left. This is where activity on your bookmarked threads will be displayed (along with any notifications of private messages).
How do we find our previously subscribed sub-forums that many of us have lovingly attended to and followed for years? The timing of this new look, in the midst of the application process, seems less than ideal.
Hi. It looks like there are some private messages or wall messages, I’m not sure which, showing up when you click Activity on the left-hand side of the screen. At least one of the messages I’m seeing doesn’t look like it was intended for public consumption, and I thought it might be helpful to let you know. I hope things are going well with the rollout overall.
Is there a way to quickly look down the thread list on a forum and see which on threads I have commented? In the past there was a distinct star on the left so I could quickly look to see. I understand the “bookmark” feature can notify me, but to be honest I don’t want to be deluged with notifications! I like to pick and choose on my own…
Hi Roger-
One feature I’d like to see returned if possible is the post number for each thread. Many of us use that to refer back to past posts so as to not have to duplicate information contained in them. For example, in response to a question I might post “Roger Dooley explains that in post #X.” instead of quoting the entire post. Thanks!
I don’t see a way to get ‘my control panel’ where I had subscribed to various forums. I can now only 'bookmark" individual threads. II would like to be able to go to a particular college and see all the threads without having to go through the whole search each time.
Personally I find the new style incredibly tedious to use. It seems like everything is white and there is no clear separation between different threads, links or posts.
Looks like one of my recent posts was truncated when the forum came back on-line in the new format,…
unless … are posts only shown in “preview” format now, and is there some sort of “expand” function?
I miss the yellow dot/yellow star the indicated new posts since I last logged on–agree with many others, that change isn’t always good–I find the new format VERY tedious. May actually discourage me from visiting CC
