I'm curious; did they give a reason?"

DD applied to 7 (5 auditions):
2 reach
3 match
2 safety
Now we're waiting for the financial packages...

2: 1 Safety (Eastern Washington University), and the University of Washington which is my first choice.

accepted to both

15--an application profile with some very strong points but also some more-average aspects, so the very highly competitive schools (4) were not out of the question, but unlikely. If one of them comes through, the resources will be well used.

Second factor, indecision between large competitive (5) and small competitive (2). I hope to have a choice among about four of these seven, but don't have a clear prefernce yet and none of them can be called a safety.

Third factor, safeties (4), three primarily to help parents' nerves.

Got in ED so ended up applying to 5 (3 rolling; 1 regular deadline the night before I heard from ED). Would have probably applied to twelve, but that was in part because I was looking to play a division 3 sport at some of them but not others.

You know - sometimes people are warrented in how many schools they apply to. For example, say someone has STRONG diverse interests - say music and science.... well what if they've got the grades and academic performance to go to an ivy, but also have the music skills to get into a conservatory... Well then you basically perform two college searches: one for music, and one for academics (the combos don't appear in great numbers)... and as a result, a semi reasonable list of 9 colleges for * one * search is multiplied by the fact that you have another search with completely different criteria. For the people that don't have a similar excuse, and just can't decide, all I can do is wonder how they make it when they go shopping for jeans... There are 100s of available... which ones do they choose?!

I applied to 6-- 2 reaches (one ED from which I was deferred, March 29th is the big day!), 3 matches (likely letter from one, haven't heard from the other two), and 1 safety (accepted into Honors program). Looking back on everything I wish I had 1) spent a little bit more time polishing my essays and 2) applied to a few more reach schools.

I was lucky though, because my parents footed the whole bill and money isn't a big issue.

i applied to 6. first choice- Notre Dame, second choice- U of M, and the safeties (Michigan State, Loyola chicago, SLU, and U of Portland).

I applied to only ONE. =).

My perfect match. Wake Forest University.

I've wanted to go there since 9th grade =).

I sent in my application right after junior year ED and was accepted before senior year started.

I completed the poll for my older sister who applied to eight colleges, one of which was ED. I applied to three boarding schools, but I suppose that's quite a bit different.

So far, my sister was deferred for ED, has been accepted to two, and the rest of the decisions are publicized on April 1st.

I sent my SAT's to 3 schools, applied to two (wasn't real interested in 3rd, and save $50), and send 2 transcripts ($0.39 is a lot of money lawls).

6 ucs, simple and clean 1 app.

i applied to 18 schools total. i sort of went crazy and applied to a ton of safeties because i was afraid i wouldn't get in anywhere. i do not recommend it. the total cost for me was about 2000 dollars and filling out financial aid stuff is really annoying.

oh and is it true that some high schools limit the number of applications kids sent out?

12 colleges.

4 safeties (been accepted already at all 4)
3 match (got into 1 already)
5 reach

the game's still on!!!!!!

7 (six too many)

10, It was pretty intense. I can't even imagine 15.

10:
3 safeties--accepted at all
4 matches
3 reaches--likely from one!

For the crazy stressed out me this seemed optimal.

Two of the safeties sent me "VIP" applications, which were basically the commonapp essay and some extracurriculars, very easy to fill out.

For each of the rest I had a highly regimented plan. Two essays for the first two weeks in november, all of the matches.
Then the last two weeks in november one reach essay each. First week in december other reach essay.

Since I still haven't recieved most of my decisions and all my financial aid packages I really can't pass judgment on whether I should have applied to a greater number of colleges or fewer. I think the amount of colleges I applied to was not insane, I did not stress out extraordinarily. However I would suggest that those who don't need financial aid really only need one safety.

10 schools:
3 reaches (accepted EA to one)
4 matches
3 safeties

10 seemed like a lot to me, but the only ones I could take off my list are two of my safeties, because I know that I'm not going to either one of them for geographical reasons. As for people who have more than 15, I know there are some people who are so pressured by their parents to go to ANY Ivy that they apply to all of them - and that's pretty much 8 reaches for most people. So, on top of that, they have to apply to other schools that are matches/safeties. Gosh, that would be a lot of work.

11 schools:
3 reaches
5 matches
3 safeties

i applied to so many because in terms of the caliber of school i wanted i am quite borderline so i need to keep my options open
