Are you sure you need 420 points? that is an 84%. Pass should be a C so 350 points.

I agree with @JewBacca because it’s a humanities class. It’s literally just memorizing terms related to people and countries. If you got into a UC, take responsibility for your actions and study your butt off! Get a 105% if you have to since this professor offers so much extra credit. If you can only get an 83 or can only get less, then you don’t really want to go to a UC. It seems you’re cool with staying at a CC for another year. (This is just a wake up call)

@bomerr -

A - 540 - 600 (90-100%)
B - 480 - 539 (80-89%)
C - 420 - 479 (70-79%)

@chaoscuber -

1) Geography is a Physical Science Course not humanities

2) it’s completely unrelated to my major whatsoever

3) I got in to a UC, meaning they felt I had the necessary skills to succeed there

4) How does memorization of terms like fluvial erosion, or which part of the atmosphere is the mesosphere, or what is the metamorphic equivalent of limestone have to do even remotely with social sciences (my major) IT doesn’t.

You seem very intent on trying to prove me wrong, so if that makes you happy then have fun. What I said to you is something that you need to hear, whether or not you were ready to listen to it.

What I do know for a fact is that I have just completed a third semester of 15+ units, with a 4.0 GPA. I have never taken a class as pass/ no pass. I was accepted into my first choice college, UCLA. I’m a successful professional, and have been for many years. I make mistakes, I admit when I’m wrong, and I do my best not to replicate the same mistakes. I take responsibility for my own life, and I do not expect others to make my life better or easier.

One day I hope you do realize that you don’t need to be combative in order to make your point. If you actually listen to other people with an open mind, you might be surprised what you might actually learn.

Dude congrats for you, that is awesome and I have no doubt that you will thrive in the UCLA environment.

All I’m attempting to communicate is that there’s nothing wrong with taking something P/NP I am horrible with physical science, I can admit that that’s why I took the course with that grading option, not because I wanted to slack off, and not for any other reason besides the reason that I am horrible with physical science.

I do have an open mind and I do know that sometimes I can be combative. I’m just very irritated that I gave the correct answers and I’m still getting screwed and that’s not right.

I’m not expecting special treatment, I’m just expecting what I earned.

@Matt4200 hope you can get her to be fair to you
@jewbacca I would be so delighted to meet you, perhaps In a course relating to gender and Anthropology.

@lamelcriada This isn’t tumblr.

I’m a social science major (polisci), took a physical geography and a meteorology class back to back with a professor with a lower overall/easiness rating on RMP and got As in both classes. Science isn’t exactly my strong suit either. If I can do that then so can you.

Physical geography or meteorology isn’t exactly the most difficult subject. Your professor has good, consistent ratings so she is probably at least a decent professor. The majority of the concepts are very straightforward and easy to understand as long as you pay attention in class, take decent notes, and read the textbook.

Seriously, if there’s anything that you don’t understand, I’ll do my best to explain it to you.

@k4201505 - Thank You,

I don’t think it’s as much of a memorization issue as a fear issue, although there’s a vast array of stuff on her tests it’s not usually just about one subject area (I.e. - Glacial processes and that’s it)

Honestly I’m afraid I’ll get 1 point off and fail the course, I know it probably sounds stupid but I’ve spent the past 18 weeks learning this stuff and to be able to fail by a point doesn’t seem fair.

And if you look she hasn’t got one new rating from anyone at my CC since 2011, idk maybe I’m just being a baby about this

@Matt4200 , I have read lots of your posts. I don’t know what it is, but for some reason you rub certain people the wrong way on this site. Maybe you do the same in person and that is the the professor won’t budge. I don’t think your request is unreasonable. I don’t think you should be penalized for not violating a court order.

I think you should pursue the zero on that missed quiz, but if she is not willing to budge, I am not sure you have enough time to contest her policies. I don’t understand the verbal quiz, I feel you are leaving something out.

I guess the only thing you can do at this point is study your ass off for the test.

It would be a pain to have to take the whole class again under the circumstance you described.

I will spare you the life is not fair speech.

Good Luck on the test.

@Annie2015 - I broke the law I got a speeding ticket I had to go to court, it’s her right to not allow me to retake that.

But the other one where I actually got the correct answers is my concern.

So what she does is she picks a day at random and in the first 5 minutes of class she asks everyone to get out a pen and paper and asks 5 questions verbally.

You write down the answer you believe is correct and turn it in.

For example: She asked Name two things that affect a Magma’s viscosity (flow) - I answered Temperature and Composition.

“A magma’s viscosity is largely controlled by its temperature, composition, and gas content” - SDSU on Magma Viscosity

But she marked me as incorrect even though I have a correct answer.

I hope I pass

@Matt4200
I’ve been in this type of situation before. You need to write (email) a letter of complaint with the department head. Is she tenured or adjunct? cuz adjunct will be more flexible if the department head bitches at them.

Personally I think she should work with you around the speeding ticket, she is being unnecessarily unreasonable and obviously the magma question is BS.

Good luck trying to get the Dean to do anything. I’ve tried and even went past the Dean at my school. Unless you can prove they are incompetent (impossible, unless you can prove they were drunk etc), you are pretty much out of luck. They follow an extremely strict protocol and all the professors back each other up.

My professor even changed the syllabus/grading but that didn’t matter either. Luckily it didn’t hurt me in the end but it changed the way I applied.

@bomerr - I think she is adjunct

Do you think I should wait and get the results first if I pass or not, I don’t really want to cause unnecessary trouble.

I know! I showed up 7-8 minutes after class had started with a legitimate reason but she said no. And I gave a right answer for the magma question and the second question.

I think I’ll just study some more tomorrow and just hope I get a 90 on the test and don’t have to worry

^ did you file a formal complaint with the district? and was the prof tenured or adjunct?

My calc teacher gave me a 0 for the 1st quiz because I used L’Hopital’s rule. She wouldn’t change the grade in spite of not warning us. So I spoke with the math department dean and sent a letter. Afterwards she said if I needed the points at the end of the semester she’d give them to me. Turned out I didn’t need them tho.

Matt, at this point you should just wait until you get the final grade. If you fail email her with your complaint. If she still doesn’t change it then send that letter to the department head / try to speak with him in person. At my CC that is necessary before filing a formal complaint with the district.

@Matt4200 of course it is her right to not allow you to retake a test or quiz but I do not think it is reasonable.
What would have happened if you did not go to court? Would it make a difference if you had a court appearance for another reason?

The reason why I have a problem with your explanation of getting the right answers because it just does not make sense. How can she just forget what she asked? Did the entire class get the answers marked wrong? Is it possible you forgot? She may have given the questions verbally, but it seems she would have written them down? It seems there are other people in the class would have the same answer as you and would also be complaining and would have the asked her why they got the answer marked wrong. I still think you are leaving something out.

@Annie2015 - I agree it is unreasonable.

She swears she just comes up with them but doesn’t write them down.

She wants the answers directly from her lectures, not answers from the book or from other geographical/geological sources.

So when she asked the question: What are two things that affect a Magma’s Viscosity?

She wanted the answers: Silica and Gasses.

And even though I answered her verbal question correctly my answers are wrong to her because they’re not what she wanted.

And the second question she asked: Where could you find some cinder come volcanoes nearby us?

I answered along Highway 395, because she spent 30 minutes the previous class drawing a diagram of highway 395 and all these cinder cones alongside it.

But of course that answer is incorrect, apparently she a specific name of a cinder cone.

She asked the question where I have her a correct location/area but because most people answered with an actual name of One and she said she couldn’t remember the actual wording of the question I get it wrong.

@Matt4200 okay, I see , well good luck on the final. I hope you don’t have to retake the class or elevate this any further. You seem to have a good handle on the material. I am sure you will be fine.

I have a feeling you never contacted her in advance about going to traffic court. Her ratings are 4.0+ across the board I’m sure she would have excused you with verifiable proof. I’ve had a lot of professors that were extremely lenient if you put in effort and communicated with them. I don’t think reporting her will do much if her feedback all around is great. And the quiz thing doesn’t make sense if the majority of the class put down the same exact answer. But, an 83-84 on a final is not impossible. You can do it. :)

Every prof I’ve had that had a strict “no make-up” policy also had a policy of dropping the lowest score, or something that kind of offset the strictness of their rule.

Once I had an instructor with a strict no make up policy. I had to miss a quiz cuz I was traveling for work. I let him know weeks in advance. He wouldn’t let me make it up, but he basically just removed that quiz from my total. So if the class was work 200 points, for me it was only with 180. So going forward, try to communicate with Profs as far in advance as you can. Most are not unreasonable heartless people. But you have to take the initiative early on.

An 83 is very doable with some serious effort. If you’re ready for a UC, then this should be very possible for you.
