Okay so my last final is on Monday and the professor is really strict on grading.

I missed the second class due to having a traffic court date 80 miles away within an hour of the class time so I got to class but about 8 minutes late.

We apparently had a quiz on the second day of class within those 8 minutes and she has a rule that no matter what you cannot take a quiz once it's done.

and on top of that Geography isn't my strong suit. The next quiz I really did get all the 5 answers correct but she only gave me credit for 3 of them stating that she did not recall the actual wording of what she said because they are verbal quizzes and could not give me credit.

Each quiz is 5% of your total grade.

So In order to Pass the course I need an 83 on the final. had I gotten the credit for the correct answers I deserved before I'd only need a 73 to pass the course.

She told the class that if you are 1 point off you still get whatever you earned.

So for example 450 = A
449 = B
And she will not bump you up even for one point.

So I'm kind of stressed I've been studying for the past two weeks hoping I can get an 83 or higher.

My question is is there anything I can do if I get a 75 on the final or higher but under 83 and she gives me a No Pass (I took the course Pass/No Pass)?

Aside from retaking the course over the summer before I transfer?

“The next quiz I really did get all the 5 answers correct but she only gave me credit for 3 of them stating that she did not recall the actual wording of what she said because they are verbal quizzes and could not give me credit.”

This is unacceptable and really irresponsible. If she doesn’t know the question that she asked, then how does she know you got the wrong answer? Your grade should not suffer because she is incompetent. Why didn’t you go complain to the dean? If she didn’t remember the question, then it should at the very least been thrown out. Maybe you can still do something about it. Didn’t you tell her anything?

@matt4200 , You just need to man up and get 100% on the final. Geography is nothing more than memorization. If you pull an all nighter you WILL get an A. I could probably memorize the entire world map of countries in one night. If all else fails contact the dean of her department and challenge the grade.

@k4201505 nope, but I was making a simple example. Either way they need to man up so they don’t get rescinded. Arguably, it’s a humanities course when it comes down to it.

You should have a talk with this professor. It’s her responsibility to remember the questions she’s asking on the quiz if it’s verbal and she shouldn’t have to take it on the students.

It sounds like you really need to aim for an “A” on the final. If not, you risk the chance of getting a non-passing grade…where did you SIR to? Would they let you take classes in the summer to make it up? It would never hurt to ask them.

Oh JewBacca I can’t believe you’ve been accepted to a UC , yet still use a verbal phrase such as “man up”. soo troubling!
anyways to the original poster I think you should talk to her, clearly explain why you think it’s unfair you did not get points for questions answered correctly. last resort you can always contest your grade with the school.

Actually, diversity is extremely valuable in the UC system. Your narrow-minded thinking is unacceptable; should everyone be a robot in your institution? Sorry I have a personality, I try not to feel sorry for myself or make excuses for my shortcomings- hence the term “man-up.” If you want to go to the extent of who has the superior intellect by the phrases they use, lets do it. I am not writing an academic paper, I am talking as a normal person. I hope I meet you at Berkeley, because I am either taking a minor or double major in anthro… @lamelcriada

I tried telling her and she said well I don’t remember the exact wording so you get them wrong.

I haven’t gone to the dean because I’m trying to salvage my grade and hopefully get the 83 on the final. But it would suck if I got an 82 and she failed me.

@k4201505 - You are right, and I got a 92 on the last map test but this next one the final is about meteorology, coastal processes, glacial processes and a lot of stuff it’s not just one area so it’s harder.

@ocnative - I SIR’d to UCSB, and yeah they will let me take it over the summer or even when I get there .

But it’s the fact that if I don’t pass it’ll be because of those 10 points from that one quiz that I was correct on.

And to have to retake the entire course over the summer simply over those 10 points is just ridiculous.

@lamelcriada - I already told her and she said she doesn’t remember the exact wording so she can’t or won’t go and change it. And yeah I can contest it but my schools policy requires her to be there I believe, and she told the whole class that the day after finals she’s going on a 3 month vacation in the Sierra Nevadas so…

@Matt4200 Go complain right now! She already did something stupid, it doesn’t matter that the final grades haven’t come out. All that matters is that she did something stupid that is negatively impacting your grade. You have to be firm, when talk to her. If you already talked to her, then go talked to the dean and explain the situation. You can’t afford to me passive. Go tomorrow!

By the way, what college does she teach at and what is her name?

@Matt4200 Wow, that is strange. She has a really high mark on ratemyprofessor. I wasn’t even aware of any laws like that, so I’m not much help. I can’t believe that she is doing this? Can’t she see that her actions are wrong? If I were you I would egg her car and house regardless of whether I passed or failed.

I looked her up on RateMyProfessors and she has pretty good reviews at all the campuses she teaches:

College of the Canyons: Overall 4.8 / Easy 4.2 [24 Reviews]
Antelope Valley College: Overall 5.0 / Easy 4.2 [34 Reviews]
Moorpark College: Overall 5.0 / Easy 4.0 [26 Reviews]
Glendale Community College: Overall 4.6 / Easy 4.4 [63 Reviews]

“Lots of extra credit,” “really easy,” and “nice” were recurring phrases I came across. I’m not sure what the situation is between you and her, but what is her grading policy on her syllabus? Is she only “strict” on grading because of the excess EC she offers?

You need 350 out of 500 points to get a C (“PASS”) in the class. With all the EC she (apparently) gives, how did you manage the 66.8% out of the total class points? (I’m assuming that since you need an 83/100 on the final that you have a 267/400.) Have you been doing the coursework/attending classes?

If she has ratings as good as that across the board then I’m having a hard time believing the class is as difficult as you say it is, Matt. If there’s one thing people who posts ratings on RMP are sensitive about, it’s the easiniess. A consistent 4.0+ rating for easiness means the class is an easy A if you put in the minimum amount of effort.

What is the grading criteria and scale for the class?

The extra credit is offered for the lab class, and I’m assuming most of the ratings are for her lab course, she offered 30 EC points which equals about 8% of the lab grade and you get 100 points just for showing up to labs. That’s why it’s an easy A.

But for her lecture class here’s the criteria:

Jury duty is a mandatory civil responsibility. We do not have say in when or if we are chosen. Traffic court is different because it is due to your own actions that you were required to go.

I’m sure you’ll say it wasn’t your fault because based on many of your posts not much is ever your fault. You give off a perception like the world owes you something. You took the easy way out of class and took it pass/ fail rather than for a letter and in this case it kind of backfired. When you do transfer I hope you really start being accountable for your actions, and look to yourself to see how you could have changed the situation, rather than blaming others.

In the case of this course I suggest you get off of CC, and hit the books, so you get the pass. Good luck.

If I was you I would delete her information and the course information. CC has high ranking search engines and updates hourly/daily on googles crawlers, this might backfire on you by posting this information. @matt4200

@2016Candles - Actually with jury duty you can choose what day you go. And no the traffic court was my fault whose else would it be? lol but that doesn’t negate the fact that I had no control over what day/time I would be mandated to go to court.

And it’s not taking the easy way out to take a course Pass/No Pass, it’s a valid option that’s why they have it.

It’s for a general education course, nothing major related, or even close. So why not take it Pass/No Pass especially if spatial science is not my strong suit?

So you don’t think I’m entitled to points that I gave a factually correct answer to that a professor refuses to undo simply because she can’t recall her own wording?

The only things I feel that I’m owed is what I have earned nothing more and nothing less it’s not like I’m saying oh I’m so close she should bump my grade up just because I’m close that would be what you’re attempting to say I am.

@JewBacca - I haven’t said anything that’s untrue.

Plus it’s been more than 15 mins so it won’t let me lol
