CC TO UC TRANSFER

I am starting my freshmen year in spring of 2019. I was planning to go to UCI with computer science because I heard there is a guaranteed university program called TAG. However, I recently heard that UCI doesnt support computer science for TAG. So I am currently undeclared with my major. I do want to use the TAG to transfer to UC because without TAG I believe I cant make it to UCs. So I only have English and Math registered for spring year in fullerton college and I havent chose my major. What other classes are required by the UCs when transfering from CC to UC. because I dont want to just take 2 classes in spring. Or do I HAVE to choose a major before registering for classes? I am lost please help me…

You could start with some IGETC courses, which is the general Ed course requirements.
See this sheet from Fullerton:

Use http://www.assist.org or information from your target school to determine courses to prepare for your major (beyond general education or IGETC requirements).

Unfortunately, UCI CS has a lot of lower division courses that are not available at community colleges, so transfer students to UCI CS may spend the first quarter or so at UCI catching up on lower division CS requirements. It is best to choose your community college course work to fulfill as many requirements as possible (including general education or IGETC) before transfer to avoid delaying graduation and allow as much schedule space as possible for upper division electives after transfer.

I heard some of the IGETC classes arent required depending on your majors. And since i am undeclared shouldnt i have to choose a major first? or is it ok to just take IGETC classes and choose major? im planning to transfer to uci in 2 years.

Ideally you have an idea of major first because if it’s STEM you might not want IGETC. Each college has its own GE req. However, all require the 2 English and quantitative math courses, and then at least four courses from at least two areas: arts and humanities, social sciences and/or physical/life sciences. It hard to give a definitive plan if you don’t know your major, but this is a start. One key is to be sure whichever courses you choose from the IGETC list also match the GE breadth list because there are more courses in IGETC than in Gen Ed breadth. If you look at the bottom of the assist page for your CCC you will see Eligibility courses. Those are the Gen Ed breadth courses. Just pick ones that are in both IGETC and Eligibility.

If you don’t know your major you need to start with these.

although I dont know my major, I do know that my goal university is UCI. Does UCI require four courses from at least two areas too for every major? by the way thank you so much for helping me. I really needed those answers.

also someone said if i only do GE courses first then choose my major, it is hard to transfer within 2 years. is that true?

How can you restart your freshman year if your previous post suggests that you’ve already attended a college?

.
Why aren’t you working with a counselor at your CC?
(You need 60 transfer units to go to a UC)

The UCs say to start Gen Ed or IGETC if you don’t know your major. I don’t know what to tell you if you don’t have a major in mind.

If you are unsure, then wait. I don’t see how these courses will set you back two years. You need the 2 English and 1 math under any circumstances. Then it’s four others, some of which will likely double and fulfill a major req if you can narrow your major options. Now if you choose a STEM that has a lot of pre-reqs before you even get to the required courses for the major, that could add a year. That is not unheard of.

@aunt bea because i used to go to a calstate but i had to drop out due to personal problems. and i didnt finish any units there. and I did talk to my counselor but I couodnt really trust her because she didnt even know UCI doesnt support computer science as tag anymore. and she told me to take English math art history and take computer science classes next year.

Her courses sound reasonable.

  1. You need English.
  2. You need to take quant math (or start working toward it).
  3. Art fulfills one area of IGETC or Gen Ed (pick a course that’s in both lists).
  4. CS in case you choose the major or to assess compatibility.
