CC to UCSD - Will my courses even transfer?

Hey there,

So I'm most likely going to UCSD this Fall to major in Lit/Writing. But I was just on assist.org and realized something: none of the courses I've taken at my comm. college are comparable to the UCSD courses I have taken for major prep.

Im going to the Transfer Admit Day on Saturday, so I know I can ask the question there, but I was wondering if any of you have any insight about this. This is really scaring me. I don't want to have wait another year to transfer. UCSD is basically my only option since I got rejected from Berkeley, and if I don't go to UCSD, I'm going to have to go to CSUN (ick..)

Thanks
-Camille

The units will transfer over, but you probably won't get credit for the courses unless you re-take them at UCSD. I asked a similar question to another UC representative and that's what he told me.

so, what you mean is that the G.E. I took will transfer, but the courses I took for major prep won't? in other words, I have to take all the major prep courses listed on assist.org at UCSD?

Thanks,
-Camille

Most likely you will, I've heard of people getting credit for courses that weren't on assist but don't count on it.

this is not true. what you will probably have to do is some type of course by course review in terms of curriculum and syllabus. before you go to ucsd, call your academic counselor and pick up all your materials from the courses you took as major prep, and they'll tell you the rest.

you should be fine.

I'm not sure about Engl. Lit., but one of the reasons I didn't go to UCSD is because I was told that I would have to finish a ton of prereq econ courses within a short time frame once I enrolled at UCSD. Usually they will give you a chance to complete them though. Take a summer session before fall if they offer it.

you will have to take major prep at UCSD. What CC did you go to? Did you take some other major prep or you just didnt look at assist.org to start with?

When you say you took courses at your CC for major prep what UC did you do that major prep for?

I go to LA Pierce College. I checked assist.org long before I applied for transfer and actually realized that the courses I was taking apparently weren't going to transfer, but UCSD reps were at my campus about a year ago and I asked a rep. about this. She asked what courses I was taking for major prep and she said that the courses sounded appropriate, but didn't really say anything else.

Since I realized that my courses weren't going to transfer to UCSD, I just did prep for the courses listed for UCLA and UC Berkeley since I initially was aiming toward those schools. I did 2 English Lit courses that are commonly required by most schools, a World Lit course, among many other English courses just for fun.

Now I'm thinking that they might accept courses for substitution so I gathered the syllabi for the courses I think might work.

Thanks,

OK i compared Pierce with a local san diego CC (i am from san diego)

Most courses for that major are NOT articulated.

Are your two english lit courses in sequence? Did it deal with specific type of literature - like british literature.

The only courses articulated with the local san diego CC are English Lit from 800-1799 and from 1800 to present. But they focus on BRITISH lit.

the other 3 preqs of lit 8a,8b and 8c have to be taken at UCSD.

Then there is the language requirement for lit.

Just to let you know, getting approval like that at UCSD is pretty hard- my friend went through this with BIO and her course was on assist.org the semester she took it but was taken off assist.org when she transfered and they didnt want to give her credit- she had to petition two times and the only reason she ended up getting credit was because the CC got involved saying that the agreement was valid and so on at the time of her taking it.

The courses that I took were called English 205 and 206: English Lit I and II. I'm looking at the syllabus for English 206 right now and the course description says that the class focuses on "the early Romantic period, through the Victorian and Modern periods, exploring a wide range of Britain's greatest writers". Therefore, I guess it is British Lit.

In 205, I believe the focus was also heavily on British authors' work. Most ppl called the class "Brit Lit", in fact. I could get a copy of the syllabus from that class from my prof. to make sure.

So these 2 classes are in sequence with each other and cover basically what UCSD's LTEN 21-23 classes cover. 8A-C i know have to be taken at UCSD, and since UCSD doesn't appear to accept Japanese for language, I guess I'll have to take that there, too. =[

Thanks for your response,
-Camille
