Is it worth it to go to UCSD for Lit major?

Hello there - i'm new to the forum and thought you guys might be able to help me out with a big question of mine about UCSD...

I was accepted to UCSD for Fall 2008 from my comm. college in the Lit/Writing major and will officially register in courses next week so I'll be going to school there in September. I was ecstatic until I saw my audit (list of courses i'm required to take to graduate). Seems I'll have to take Spanish every quarter (since I'm starting at Intermediate level based on results of placement test), "Making of the modern world" 3-course sequence (ERC req), and a lower-division lit sequence with 2 courses that I think I've already taken at my comm. college (Brit Lit pre 1660 & Brit Lit post 1660-1800s).

I was told I could petition the Brit Lit courses, but I went to an orientation a couple of months ago and asked one of the depatment advisors about this option, and she told me that it would be highly unlikely that my courses would be accepted for petition. She also told me I would have to wait until classes started to petition, but now I got an email saying that i should have petitioned the classes a long time ago! UGH!! I tried calling the Lit department to ask where and if I can still petition, but no one answers the phone..

I was willing to have to take those classes again until I saw how much more of a course load I was going to have to take. At this point it looks like I'll be taking 4 courses each quarter (if not more if I have to re-take the Brit Lit classes) and summer courses and hope I can graduate in 2 years.

To conclude, I am very frustrated by all this and am suddenly considering just saying never mind to UCSD and going to a local Cal State since their Creative Writing program seems much more organized (not to mention that all the classes I took for major prep are automatically accepted without petition and all my classes will be directly related to the study of English).

Soo, what do you all think? Is it worth it to go through all the run-around and go to UCSD, or just go to a Cal State where everything is pretty much set (and cheaper lol)?

Go for the calstate and send UCSD a rejection letter. I figure that UC is more for research and all that stuff anyways.

It's hard to say. What do you plan to do after undergrad? If you are planning to get a M.A. or go into teaching, I think that the Cal State will serve you better in this case. If you don't want to go to grad school or teach, a degree from UCSD will look much better on your resume. TBH, I went to UCSD the other day and I found that they operate differently than the other UC and Cal State schools. Especially with the whole six colleges thing. It's not for me.

doesnt really sound worth it
