I really need help trying to narrow down my options and find a school that fits me. I currently have a 3.83 and I plan on transferring out of community college after the spring. I have 63 credit hours completed but because I only switched to computer science over the summer, I will still be 3 classes short of an AS after the spring.

I have applied to:
Case Western Reserve
Rutgers
Lehigh
Northeastern

My EC's are a bit weak. Nothing special. Recommendations will be good but again nothing stellar.

I really don't have anyone that has really been able to give me advice. I'm pretty sure I can get into Rutgers? Rutgers can be considered a safe school for me?? Idk what to think even..

So yeah.. computer science.. northeastern quarter of the US.. please help :/

I like bigger schools with preferably some research activity. Should I be trying to get more safety schools? I'm hesitant to even look at schools that aren't ranked in computer science since I feel like I'll get into Rutgers.

Is anyone else in a similar situation?

Rutgers

Are you instate for Rutgers?

Does anyone know if Rutgers gives good aid to instate transfers?

if you’re instate for NJ, what other instate publics have CS?

Do you know how much your family will pay?
Do you know what your FAFSA EFC is?

If you need aid, use the Net Price Calculators on the websites to see what aid you’d get as a TRANSFER. Be sure to indicate that you’re a transfer student. I don’t think NEU gives good aid to transfers, don’t know about the others.

If you need a lot of aid, then you may need to apply to the top schools that give the best aid.

Maybe RPI…does URoch have CS? Tufts has CS in both A&S and Eng’g.

Hey thanks for the response. I am instate for Rutgers. The price is definitely the biggest draw for Rutgers.

The only other instate school (that isnt princeton) that has a decent computer program seems to be NJIT. But from what I’ve heard Rutgers is more my fit.

We’re looking to pay < ~35k.
Our EFC is like 52k…

So yeah I’ll be needing some aid for most private schools but not soo much. Do you really think that I should be looking at schools as highly ranked as Tufts? Its kinda hard for me to understand where I fall in the ratings.

“I really don’t have anyone that has really been able to give me advice.”

The two best resources would be your CCs Transfer Advisor, and the faculty members in your department. Have you spoken with them?

Merit-based aid for transfer students is extremely rare. I do not know of any place that offers merit aid at the level that you would need it to make a 50K college or university affordable for you. If you belong to PTK, check the website for colleges and universities that offer merit scholarships to members. You may find something that is more affordable.

The good news is that 35k will cover OOS cost at a lot of public universities. Use the college-matching search engines to track down places that offer your major that fall within your price range.

Nice I have a mom brigade helping me :)

I have talked to professors in the department and I have largely been guided to Rutgers or NJIT as it is close and cheap.

Rutgers is rated very well for their computer science program.

I REALLY want backups and other options though. I still feel like I’m missing something. Ive used college-matching search engines but I find it more helpful to look through computer science rankings as this seems more relevant?

Maybe I’ll reanalyze how I’ve been searching.

I will definitely be checking out PTK website.

Then that suggests that no school besides HYPs is going to give you need based aid …and some don’t accept many/any transfers. Doesn’t matter that your family can only pay $35k, the schools will expect you to pay all costs since your CSS Profile family contribution will likely be as high or higher than your FAFSA EFC.

I think you need to find either an OOS public or an instate school that meets your budget. The privates are costing $55-60k+ and they’re not going to likely give you any aid other than a small loan.
