CC Transfer Pre-med Prereqs

Hi,

I'm a transfer student from a CC and was wondering if you guys could help clear this up for me. During my time at the CC, I took Orgo 1 and Calc 2. Now that I am at a 4-year institution, I plan on taking Physics 2 there this summer. Would the fact that I have taken 3 of the 8 pre-med requirements at a CC heavily hurt my chances when applying to med school? Thanks

There are only 2 medical schools which wil not accept CC credits for pre-reqs (Creighton and I think it’s Virginia Commonwealth). Assuming you weren’t planning on applying to either of these schools and your grades at your 4 year are good, then it shouldn’t be an issue.

yeah, other than those 2 schools, some As in other science classes at your new school will adequately show your aptitude and no one will bat an eye at the CC courses.

I can mention at least one more school that doesn’t - JHU SOM. Some schools say they accept CC credit and turn around and say in the very next sentence that CC classes may not be competitive.

As I was going through the MSAR selection factors recently, I came across schools with res X marks, red check marks and empty space in the “Comm. College Credit Accepted” column.

kal,

don’t conflate “don’t accept” with “don’t like.” I think there are very few schools who would flat out say “you took X pre-req at a CC and therefore in our eyes you haven’t taken X.” There are definitely many schools who will say “you got an A in X pre-req at a CC but that’s not as good as the person who got an A in X pre-req at a 4 year college,” or particularly “you attend a 4 year college but chose to take X at a CC. That looks to us like you are taking the easy way out and we don’t like students who take the easy way out because medicine is hard.”

The last one certainly does not apply to OP. The middle scenario sort of applies but I would assume that if OP has As in upper level bio classes that it would eliminate any doubt that his success in CC was just due to the less competitive environment.

I don’t think, I made up anything through interpretation. Here are two quotes from two different schools supporting what I said. You may interpret them differently, however …

Pritzker says (extracted from their Admissions FAQ):

JHU says (posted by one of their staff on their Facebook page):

“recommend” does not equal “require” for pritzker. While pritzker may put less weight into an A in a CC class, they would still count it as having fulfilled the requirement.

It would appear that JHU does not accept such coursework and should be added to the “list of two”

P.S. how do you quote?

Use brackets.

[/quote ]
, but take out my extra spaces at the end.

I believe, what I said was that some schools say they accept CC credits while also pointing out CC credits are competitive. I gave Pritzker as an example of that. If Pritzker counting them as pre-reqs is more important than Pritzker treating them as less competitive, you are right :D

I believe, I saw more schools that don’t accept CC credit. But it takes too much time to dig up quotes for each. So I will leave it at that.

I also said that there are a LOT of schools that have no explicit policy on CC credit. Again, it takes too much time and space to mention all of them.

Anybody with access to MSAR Online, and a need to verify these facts can do so easily.

kal,

I was under the impression that for this student, the most important thing was whether or not they needed to retake pre-reqs given that they are transferring from a CC. Therefore, I think it is more important to point out that Pritzker will still accept them regardless of what they think of them. Wowmom and I had both stated that it was important to take other science classes to account for the fact that many schools look down on CC classes (way more than you can find quotes from).
