Gov. Jerry Brown today signed bills making billions of cuts in California's budget, raising community college fees and slicing support for the developmentally disabled and mentally ill.

The package raises community college fees from $26 per unit to $36 per unit and defers $2.1 billion in payments to K-12 schools to 2012-13.

All told, the measures address at least $8 billion of the state's $26.6 billion defiicit.

"We've gone a significant part of the way," Brown said after signing the bills. "It's not the kind of thing I like doing ... but when you have a deficit you have to do something."

Capitol Alert: Jerry Brown OKS billions in budget cuts

This is a good thing, imho. $36 is still dirt cheap, and those who really care about education will find a way to afford it (especially with California's fairly generous financial aid programs), but it will discourage the time-wasting students who only register to keep their parents from kicking them out.

I'm sure there will be some students who genuinely care about their classes but can't afford $150 more per semester. That said, for most people this is very good—it will simultaneously lower demand and increase funding.

$36 is still dirt cheap!!

The BOG waiver covers all of my tuition for CC and cuts my parking in half. Then the federal government gives me money straight to my bank account just to go to school (so I don’t even need to work). 36 per unit will really not affect us much because here in California, we have very cheap tuition compared to most other states. Someone from Baltimore and another person I know from Chicago told me all about how they have to pay thousands of dollars every semester JUST for tuition at their CC’s. We have it quite nice over here :)

The tuition is the cheapest part, but it can be decieving because the true cost of a class is often much higher because of mandatory books

Breakdown of last Spring:

Physics: 4 units ($104), + 2 used textbooks ($350) True price of class = $554
Chem 200: 4 units ($104)+ 2 used textbooks ($305) True price of class = $409
English 210: 3 units ($78), 5 used books ($200), True price of class = $278
Anthro 103: 3 units ($78), 3 used books ($235), True price of class = $313

Typical 14 unit semest total cost = $1,554

^Exactly. The time wasters are less likely to buy those books, since they really don’t care that much. For them, this $150 jump is a high percentage. For us, it’s like two of our professors chose brand new textbooks, with no used copies available.

Physics book (almost new, brand new edition) covering: Physics 4A, 4B, 4C, and 4D: $50 from former UCR student I found on facebook.

Calculus book covering Calc 1,2,and 3: $100 off of Amazon (good condition)

English 1B book: None! $0 Teacher decides to give us photocopies and short stories that author friends of his have written but not published yet

Chem book covers 1A and 1B (brand new edition): $100 almost new off of amazon.

English 1A book (almost new): $50 on amazon.

Math 35 book, teachers edition: $40 on abebooks. com

Math 36 book (brand new edition): $100 on amazon.

World religions 2 books: combined, $30 on amazon.

Psychology book: $60 on amazon.

math 10 book: $50 on amazon.

Intro Chem: $50

differential equations $50

French 1: $10 amazon

Chem Lab manuals: $20

Bio book (brand new edition): $100 of amazon
bio lab manual: free photocopied by professor!

That’s just about every class I took here.
Total: $860 over 2 years
that’s not too bad right?

Being a self-supporting student, without BOGFW I wouldn’t be able to afford that. Luckily I am in EOPS so I get a book fund and a parking permit. It costs me about 30 dollars a semester at school. While this doesn’t affect me personally I know lots of people that it would. However, that is still dirt cheap. I’m from Florida and the tuition for one semester at CC is about 1100. That doesn’t include books and supplies.

I don’t mind sacrificing on the education level with things like this, so long as they are kicking in taxes on the upper end as well. I understand the situation, and that all citizens have to sacrifice, but it bothers the hell out of me that the oils companies are making record profits and not paying any taxes to California or the US.

If you’re thrifty you can get books for almost nothing. I check on ratemyprofessor which teachers allow old edition books. Half.com you can get older books for like 1-20$.

My hard sciences (chem physics) all required new editions and 2 of my English textbooks were just written so used ones werent that much cheaper.

But it is true I have had semesters where I pay alot less.

Meh its a good thing, anyone that literlly couldn’t afford it gets a bog waiver that completely waives tuition and on top of that would probably get 5500 dollars in pell grant to buy textbooks lol. I can buy my full years worth of textbooks for 500 easily and pocket the 5k. Anyone that makes to much money to recieve a bog waiver shouldn’t care because 36 dollars/unit probably wouldn’t even ding you financially.

Oh well. I hear people in my class ***** about the costs (especially books), and they come to class with a Macbook pro and black berry. Did they not get enough tips at Hooters?

Hey walleats, did you have Shorts for 1b English?

I don’t get any financial aid because my mom makes around 80k a year, and since I’m under 24 I have to file as a dependent. My mom usually doesn’t pay for any of my school/personal stuff, so that extra 10 bucks per unit is money I can be spending elsewhere! I’m taking 19 units= extra 200 dollars in school fees, but eh, it’s still dirt cheap.

they cut summer classes at my school -_____- i was hoping to take some more classes before i transferred

^^completely? That’s crazy. Where do you go?

San Diego Mesa College - i specifically wanted to go at that campus because theres this calc teacher i wanna take and she was really good.

edit: i believe completely

Wow, I feel like thats a big enough campus to still offer summer sessions. Transferring is just going to get so much more difficult with all these budget cuts.

Luckily I too qualify for the BOG waiver so I took advantage of that, and I’m so grateful! It appears that the tuition increases will gradually rise rather than there being a huge $40 jump or something like that. But it’s still pretty cheap, not as cheap as the $20 it was two years ago but a very good value if you take advantage of it all.

Why do you think Mesa cut their summer session? That is where I go and I havent heard anything like that

my friend went to the counselor today and she said that they were cutting summer session.
