How strict are UNC's rules on buying your own computer? This year's minimum requirements seem a little high, seeing as how they seem to even exclude buying a Mac.

You can buy your own computer. You don’t have the tech support on campus, but its fine.

One thing to consider is that macs don’t always work well with science programs that you might have to use.

Whenever the new Mac upgrades come out (and it should be soon), they will meet the requirements because they will have the new intel processors.

Packerfan: If going into a humanities field would there be any issue for programs on macs like there is with science fields?

I can’t think of any. I just know that science programs like chemdraw and datastudio can the finicky with macs.

Not to bring a whole Mac vs. Pc thing in here, but you can buy some i3-i5-i7 equipped PC’s for much cheaper than Core2Duo Macs. I guess I would just say to those people looking for computers, unless you want to shell out $1000-$1500+ for outdated technology, just buy a PC. Of course, Mac will be refreshing soon, but that premium for a Mac is still a bit high IMO.
