Has anyone taken or is taking this course with Dr. Gaston? He suggests that we use book online but then in syllabus says for open book tests you cant use laptop only the book and handwritten notes. He also talks about getting an access code. Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks

Did he e-mail the class already? I’ve been first on the waitlist for the H-version since May and I’m starting to get worried that I won’t get in. I’m going to e-mail him some point to see if he’ll let me in, because I really need this class.

Yes…he has emailed us 3 times but each time it is a little bit more confusing…

Yah he is really disorganized most of the time. Took him last semester. He didnt allow laptops in lecture, nor did my TA in discussion.

There also were no open book tests. Just two midterms and a final. There were, however, online quizzes for every chapter you completed on your own time. They were 10-15 multiple choice and could be taken multiple times with the same questions. (ie 100% guaranteed). A lot of people forgot about them and got mad when he wouldnt extend the deadline so he might have done away with them. (hence the open book tests being mentioned)

Some days we were required to bring the text to discussion, so Id reccommend buying the physical book. I got it pretty cheap off amazon.

In any case, Gaston is funny, and its a really really easy class.

Thanks for the information. This year he is requiring an online component that you need to purchase for $90. I believe it includes online version of the text but like you I wanted to purchase the physical book. The bookstore only has the book but no access to online part. Really dont want to have to pay for physical book and online component.

Id just hold off until the first day of class, and see what he says, unless he gives more clear information.

Class was easy as hell and the teacher is super cool.

e: Only tough assignment was having to give a presentation on a part of the discussion section book, but I use ‘tough’ in a relative fashion.
