CE major: CSU Long Beach vs. Cal Poly Pomona

California State University, Long Beach &
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona

I'm transferring from Community College to one of these schools, as a Civil Engineering major.

I would strictly be going to school, no working. If I went to Long Beach I would commute from home, and if Pomona I would live there.

Approaching from all aspects on these schools (any input you can think of, academics, campus life, post-college prosperity, etc.), which one do you all think is better?

I would go with Cal Poly.

I work for a large energy company in L.A. We hire a lot of grads from both schools.

Academically, I believe Cal Poly Pomona is held in higher esteem.

Particularly in Civil Engineering where employment is frequently in smaller consulting firms, it would help to have the larger engineering network connections that CP Pomona would provide.

Also, it is a matter of preference and cost, but going to CP Pomona and living on campus would provide a more comprehensive college experience than the commuter school envrionment of CSU Long Beach.

How about Cal Poly SLO?

Cal poly would be better

CPSU SLO > Pomona

I am leaning more towards Cal Poly Pomona too. Cal Poly SLO would be very ideal. However, they don't take transfers for spring quarter, and I have a 3.00gpa, so I doubt I would get accepted there.

Yeah. It's way hard to transfer in. In my mind, harder to transfer in than to get into it as a freshman.

engineering is the only college at cal poly pomona left with national distinction across all disciplines. so for the major you are alright. but if the name of the university means anything to you, long beach state is moving upward (thanks in large part to retired prez maxson) and pomona has been in a fifteen year slide, recently fueled by the mess in its largest college, business.
