When I move to Durham, do I need to change the area code on my cell phone from my local area code to the Durham area code, or can I keep my local area code and just dial 919 every time I want to call someone in Durham? For Verizon (which is my carrier), aren't long distance calls free (that is, included in my anytime minutes for no extra charge)? Or what did you guys do?

just dial 919

yeah....i have verizon. 919 does the trick.

You only really use 919 for local services (aka getting a taxi or food delivered) and the occasional couple of friends who happen to be from around the Durham area. It's not like you're going to be sitting around calling up all of the Durham locals. Most of the friends you'll make will have their own area codes from around the country/world, so you'll just dial those -- or, actually, you'll just program those into your phone. Everyone I know just kept their old number.

jimmy johns and dominoes are my favorite 919's :)

I CAN'T WAIT FOR JIMMY JOHNS!

It's like, number 2 on my speed dial after home. love.

My favorite 919s are definitely Jimmy John's and...duh...Cosmic. I don't care that it's way cheaper to walk there to a) buy the $1 quesadillas without the jacked-up delivery price and b) not have to pay the $7 minimum. I still love getting my Cosmic delivered to my door :)

But yeah, Jimmy John's...I'm in withdrawal. My first night back at Duke, I'm calling them up and getting myself two #4s with no mayo. (Is it sad that I have the number of my favorite order memorized?)

cool. what if 919 isn't the cell phone's area code of the person i'm calling?

uh no:) #2 no mayo. i can't wait.

i also can't wait for a chicken caesar wrap from Maddhatters. and black and white cake from Maddhatters. basically, i'm suffering from serious Duke withdrawal.

UltimateFrisbee- well, most people I called didn't have Durham area codes...like someone said its mostly services. It's best to have a plan that allows unlimited long distance so you can just dial the 10 digit number and not have to worry about anything.

i'm either a #6 no mayo or a #16 no mayo, myself. oh jimmy john's...
i can't wait for that same madhatters cake, as well as their seasonal cookies, nasher sandwiches, bull durham lounge (waduke) salads -- and, what will likely be my first food points purchase -- a loop oreo shake. yum.

seriously, who doesnt order from JJ's???

OREO MILKSHAKES ARE THE BEST.
I'm still a fan of the $1 quesadillas. And Peppermint Mocha/Pumpkin Spice coffees from Trinity (I swear, they're better than the Starbucks versions).

And yeah, pretty much everyone and their mom orders from JJ's. It's like one of the Duke student requirements -- be smart, like basketball, order Jimmy John's.

(I love how this pretty much just degenerated into a conversation about food at Duke. Can you tell we're all probably in withdrawal?)

i actually didn't have jimmy john's until a few months into sophomore year when domino's wouldn't deliver when i was drunk on a thursday night. but once i had my first, it was love... some summer highlights were stumbling into the nyc cosmic with duke IDs and getting discounts!
