Cell phone reception on campus

Hi,
This is a question to any current students. I'm a 2012er (yay!) and am very conflicted about what to do about my cell phone situation. I currently have a family plan with my fam on Verizon, but my contract is up for renewal in August. I have to decide whether to stay with the cheaper (on the basis of it being a family plan) Verizon plan and risk having the terrible service I've heard rumors about (and experienced a bit during Admit Weekend) or to try to convince my parents to pay a lot more for me to have my own AT&T line, but with guaranteed good service. What should I do? I really would prefer to stay with Verizon, but if it's going to be completely unusable then I would be screwed for 2 years. Ah! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is a family plan with AT&T an option?

AT&T is by far the best one for Stanford(they have a tower on campus, and some sort of exclusivity agreement, from what I've heard)

Van2010 - I wish, but unfortunately no. Verizon would murder us with cancellation charges. That would be the best solution though :(
Nngmm - I've heard rumors about that too... odd, isn't it? I guess I'm wondering if having Verizon is manageable at all.

Verizon and Stanford are horrible. I don't have much to say because I'm ... not a student there, but I've visited several times with my dad on his recruiting trips and verizon reception is just horrible on campus.

Hi Guys,

There is a prior thread about this subject on page 4...entitled "mobile phone service at Stanford"...take a look at those replies as well.

If at all possible, it would be great if you could have your family switch to the AT&T family plan when your Verizon plan expires. We had a similar situation, and were ready to renew with the Verizon plan but heard about the poor reception at Stanford (my son is also in 2012)...we did a bit of researching and luckily decided to switch to AT&T.

I'm so happy we made the switch on many levels...our reception is better here at home, too...plus they have "rollover minutes", etc. Better already! Plus, if anyone in the family decides to get the iPhone, we're ready!

Best of luck!

from my experience during AW, verizon works decently outdoors, but whenever you're in a building the reception becomes 0.
I'm on individual plan verizon now (i'm int'l student) anyway, so when my contract expires in late sep i'm getting AT&T.

After this year on campus, with both my room mate and I having Verizon, I'll say that Verizon is irritating, but not unuseable. You'll get no reception in academic buildings and sketchy service outside (2-3 bars). I've had better luck in dorms, usually finding a couple spots where it works. There will be a lot of dropped calls, but for me, the extra cost of switching to AT & T didn't really justify a change. As for other companies, Sprint service is acceptable while T-Mobile is almost as bad as Verizon. Good luck next year!

I'll also throw in that as far as off-campus goes, Verizon has very good service all around the bay area. Literally, the second Palm Drive turns into University Ave and you walk down into Palo Alto, full service.

Thanks so much for all the advice, everyone!

I have Verizon and i'm currently working at stanford
and the service around the School of Medicine is really bad. I don't know if this helps, but yea, other areas seem to work fine

If you're trying to convince your parents to switch to AT&T, be sure to tell them that all Stanford students qualify for a 15% discount on minutes plans (doesn't apply to text/internet plans :)
