MadeinChina, I think Sprint will work fine, because Sprint and Verizon have roaming contracts, so whereever there is no Sprint service, you'll just be roaming on the Verizon network.

So how bad is AT&T? I have a blackberry on TMobile right now and cant go back to a regular phone on Verizon and object to paying $100 a month for voice, data and texts. I'm thinking about getting the 3G iPhone if anyone knows how the coverage is on campus (specifically in and around the buildings on north, the arts quad and collegetown).

AT&T is fine. I would say that AT&T and Verizon have the best service on campus and most people tend to go with those providers. The only reason I choose to remain with Verizon is that it's the only provider that has service in my hometown.

TMobile and Sprint have spotty service...

is there any possible way to get a sim card from Verizon ?
I really keep my iphone...

Isn't the iPhone on AT&T?? Lots of people at Cornell have iPhones and they work just fine.

i unlocked mine :)

ohhhh...I think I read somewhere that even with the unlocking the iPhone still won't work on the Verizon network. I think has to do with the fact that Verizon is built on CDMA technology and the others are on GSM. But, I know nothing about computer/phone technology and I could be way off on that :-)

do any of you international students have problems getting a cell phone plan in ithaca? i emailed verizon twice and they never gave me an answer...

i had a friend who was unable to get one, so he had to stick with those annoying int'l phone cards... :( i dont want to do the same...so hopefully someone can prove me wrong?

@elainey: There shouldn't be any problem for subscribing wireless.. Well I can't say I'm very sure in Ithaca, but in where I am at right now.. There was no problem applying.. And you can always apply it online, can't you?? I'm using T-mobile now.. and I know people who are international students and they are using AT&T.. I'm not sure about Verizon though..

I have an interesting question:

Would the data used while using Skype also count towards your 10GB a month limit? Just wondering, because if not, any Int'l student who has a computer and their family has a computer could use Skype instead of worrying about international calling cards.

dew, my best friend has an iPhone and i can only reach her about 25% of the time. the only way it worked in her room is if she talked right up against the window to get service. it would drop the call after about 5-10 minutes.

Does anyone know if ATT works fine on west campus?

I have sprint and considering they're with Verizon, it would be beneficial for me to stay with them, no?

edit: what sort of cell phone is recommended? PDAS/Smartphones or phones with e-mail/web or just regular texting and calling phones? (plan as well).

@chendrix: Yes it does count :)

EVERYONE has a blackberry! omggg. so if you want to be like everyone...

but ive survived with just a regular camera/texting phone. definitely get one with texting.

I can't explain that...2 of my friends have iPhones and I never had a hard time reaching them.

Unless, I missed something Sprint isn't with Verizon. Its just that their both on the CDMA network standard, but I'm sure they have different coverages.

Not together together, but together as in a sprint user can roam on their service for free. I asked a rep on-line yesterday. :)

ANY traffic not in the internal network will count against your 10GB limit. That means anytime you use the internet in anyway to reach something that outside of Cornell will you be charged for data use. Note that if you're Skypeing to someone within Cornell (i.e. physically using the Cornell network) you may be charged against the limit, depending on how Skype routes traffic.

The traffic used by Skype isn't really that much. According to this, it would take about 40 hours of calling to reach 1GB.
