Cell Phone Service

Which cell phone provider works best in dorms? When I stayed at WashU, my phone (I use AT&T) had no bars at all. Or does the quality of phone affect service too?

Verizon works great for our son all over campus and beyond.

The general consensus is that verizon is the best on campus.

I have AT&T, and have never had a problem in any of the dorms so it could be phone by phone (I have nothing fancy). The only places I don’t get service are in a few pockets of labsci 300 (where the big lectures are held) and in the DUC, so I’ve never really had any problems.

D has had problems with AT&T service - in Engineering area, DUC, and dorm areas. Both texts and calls were hit and miss when she was visiting campus - and also when group went bowling at an off-campus site.

AT&T is what I’ve used, and I’ve been totally happy with my service. Works fine in dorms, around campus, around town, and so on for me. Basically no service in the DUC, though. Most people do go with Verizon, so I guess i’d agree with Johnson and Jimb that it’s got the best coverage, if you’re not trying to stay on a family plan with another provider or anything…

Can anyone here comment on t-mobile? I’m currently using t-mobile but might switch to another carrier/renew my contract to get a nicer phone (maybe a touch screen, web access, etc.)

I know of a couple people who used T-Mobile, so it must have had at least decent coverage, but I don’t know any more than that… I stuck with my regular plan with a cheap cell phone, and got an iPod Touch for email/web-access — there’s Wi-Fi all over campus, so that works fine and saves you AT&T’s exorbitant monthly fees…

Can you comment on how prevalent the Wi-Fi is on campus? I’m considering getting a smart phone at the moment but having trouble justifying the cost (I already have an iPod Touch)

^I’ve used my iPod touch on campus to access the internet. You can connect nearly anywhere on campus (there are a few no-wifi pockets on campus though, but you really wouldn’t need to connect there anyway).

oh thank god!!
I was getting really really worried about paying 30 dollars a month to use the internet through AT&T’s 3G network. Wifi makes me feel so much better!

Ya, i didn’t feel like the extra $30 was worth it, to me. The physics buildings don’t have Wifi, which is annoying, but other than that I don’t really have issues with it.

Do any carriers get service in the DUC?

Verizon works great in the DUC per our son.

My son says that Verizon works everywhere on campus.

Don’t get AT&T, it’s got horrible coverage. Every time I walk into the (subterranean) on-campus Subway, service gets cut off.

nooooo i want an iphone!

I had this same response, nooob. I really wanted an iPhone but after living on campus for 5 weeks for HSSP I found that the service for AT&T doesn’t cut it. It doesnt work in most of Eads, January Hall (only one class room there though) and quite a few other places. Most disturbing is that it does not work in the DUC - I read online that all other major cell services have a transmitter in the DUC but AT&T had some fit they threw over the contract and it has yet to be resolved, so there is virtually zero AT&T service; my experience confirms this.

I guess I will hold out for blackberry storm 2 and hope it’s better than the first.

noooo, will i have to wait until August 1 for the G2? That’ll mean I can’t use a new phone throughout all of summer :frowning: hmmm…

Masra- I’ve never had problems with service in Eads or January Hall with AT&T.

bump…

I was planning to get an iphone myself… would this be that bad of a choice?
