Since we are going to living a wood forest environment. What kind of cellular phone service do you guys recommend??

I have AT&T and never had any issues with coverage. I do have some friends who had some issues getting reception ONLY in the College 10 apartments (not dorms), but I do know that they didn’t have AT&T. I heard Verizon works fine on campus as well.

You can go to different cellular provider websites and actually check their coverages for a given city. Just type in 95064 (UCSC’s zip code) and see how they stack up. If you already have a cellular service, you really don’t need to change just because of the campus environment.

AT&T gets decent coverage across campus and usually always 3G (I regularly use the internet on my phone when waiting for buses). I’ve had very few issues and they’re usually in relation to being in a basement with thick walls.

However, my friends that have Verizon routinely lose service as they enter campus. There’s incredibly spotty coverage on the west side of campus I know for sure. Friend who lost reception entering campus did so from the west entrance. Friend living on campus says she’s lucky to get reception at the Porter dorms. I’m not sure about the rest of campus, though. It’s definitely a problem on west campus, though.

I do have a family member on Sprint, but while his coverage is decent in the mountains in other areas of California, it’s terrible in the Santa Cruz mountains and around campus. No clue about T-Mobile.

I really would not trust any of the providers’ maps for where they cover. Especially whatever AT&T or Verizon says about their own coverage (or the coverage of others). I agree with MidnightGolfer to just stick with whatever service you might already have. And if you don’t already have service, just go with whichever one gives you the best options/phone you want for the best price. UCSC is fairly upfront that most providers have spotty coverage at best on campus.

I have AT&T, and I get coverage everywhere except right by the west entrance. All the dorms get good reception.

AT&T is the best on campus, they just put up new towers 2-3 years ago. It’s spotty at Porter because the construction lead to taking the tower down. I think it was down about 8 months and just came back online. Verizon is a decent second choice - I had them for 2 years with minimal problems. If you’re already in a contract with them, keep it. Sprint and MetroPCS are basically nonexistent here. T mobile is somewhere in between.

Actually, AT&T has always been just fine at Porter for me. They must have just put the tower back up for winter quarter then?

I use AT&T and I almost always have coverage. I don’t know about Verizon but I hear T-mobile is pretty bad signal-wise on campus.

How about Virgin Mobile?

tmobile is pretty horrible. theres certain spots that get it. i always had to put my phone by my window(college 9). and i know that i for sure get no service at the apartments. once you enter a building theres pretty much no service too. at&t is the best, i believe.

How about at Potter?..im having T-mobile too…

when i was at porter, i kept getting dropped phone calls. but i was only outside the dining hall. im not sure about in the dorms, since i havent been to porter dorms.
