Cell phones

Anyone know how good Alltel coverage is on campus and in the dorms? Any other suggestions?

i use verizon and i have had nothing but problems with it in my hometown. i'm going to ND next year, and both times when i was on campus it worked beautifully (better than at my high school even!). i was texting across time zones and everything seemed fine.

idk bout alltel

T-mobile works fine.

Hmm, I hate Verizon on campus...It is fine up North but on South quad it is quite another story. I think Alltel is alright but they are installing a lot of new cell phone towers this summer so hopefully it will be better for everyone!

My freshman daughter has told me that the university is now pushing Verizon and Cingular (soon to be AT&T); so you know anything about Sprint's coverage on campus?

I read an article dates 4 years ago saying that you couldn't even get an indoor Spring signal. Do you know if this is still true? If it is, we'll have to think about switching carriers :-(

I don't know about Sprint but what I do know is that last year reception was awful for pretty much every carrier on South Quad. However, they put up new cell phone towers which should help solve the problem. The catch is that only Cingular and Verizon bought into them so they will only help those two services.

My gut says that I would probably have your daughter switch carriers, especially since we no longer have phones in the rooms! However, I will bump this because I don't know anyone who has Sprint!

Alltel's fine. We had it for the first three years our son was there, and no problems - in fact, I think he thought it was even a little better than some of the others. But that might have just been his dorm - I don't remember. Anyway, Alltel's a go.

We switched to Sprint because of a hometown move, and our son switched to Sprint as well, and has about the same service as with Alltel.

Good information - we will likely just send her to school with her current Sprint phone and see what kind of reception she gets around campus. If the signal is too weak from her room (Mod Quad dorm), we might then switch her to another carrier.

Of course, she would just love to get a new phone now :-)

If she is in Mod Quad, she should be fine. Cell reception has always been much better up there. It is South Quad that is a problem
