Century Apartments - why not?

I'm attending USC on exchange from Australia in Fall 2009 so I'm looking at housing and reading threads in here on various options. I'm a senior so looking more at the suites and apartments. Anyway from the discussion on CC, Webb Tower, Cardinal gardens, Troy Hall and East seem to be the most popular.

But what about Century Apartments? Its in a good location, has a pool, seems reasonably priced, but I haven't seen many comments on it. A few people say its nice. What do people think of it? Is there a reason why it isn't discussed much or doesn't seem that popular. I did read somewhere someone saying it is the Gay and Lesbian building. Does that have any truth to it?

Which universities in Australia have a partner relationship with USC? All the universities I seem to know (meaning the sydney ones haha) are all linked with the UC system.

Sorry I know off topic but just curious.

The Australian National University (ANU) is linked with the Marshall School of Business. Any opinions on housing?

I know a couple people who lived in Century. They said it's not bad for the price, and it's just across the road from campus. It does get overlooked in favour of other off-campus places such as Troy and Webb though. The Rainbow Floor is located in Century if my memory's correct.

It was the top pick for my son and 3 friends for next year, based on a combination of location, price and reputation. It's probably a tacky building just because of when it was built, but the pool will be nice. These guys will be surprised if they've stumbled into an exclusively LGBT apartment complex - I assume there is more to it beyond the rainbow floor.

Someone in another thread from ages ago said that Century was called rainbow and was "the Gay and Lesbian building". But just a community floor called the rainbow floor sounds more accurate.

Does anyone know about the social life at Century or for that matter the other upperclassmen housing. I want a fairly lively social scene, but one that allows for serious study at times as well.

Century was definitely not only with LGBT student. That old thread that you found was quite inaccurate. According to their website, "it is located in Century Apartments 2 on the second floor, Wing C." Only a small section of Century is in this group. However, that section is an awesome community as well. Here is the info for that floor:

Century also usually houses lots of athletes. It really houses a large variety of people. It should be fine.

DO NOT LIVE IN CENTURY IF YOU CAN LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE. At least for your freshman year don't. It's incredibly anti-social, off-campus and away from all the other dorms, and generally is one of the last to fill (probably for those reasons). Unlike most other freshman housing buildings, people don't leave their doors open. The only friends I really made from my building were my roommates (who thankfully were a bit more social than the rest of my hall) and some people from one other apartment down the hall. Everyone else I met in classes or activities or at parties. Just about everyone I know who lived there hated it...

The only real positives are the private bathroom for you and your apartment-mates, the kitchen, the living room, etc... but you can find that in some of the other suite-style buildings on campus anyway. There are also a lot of non-freshman living there, which isn't really what you want when you first get to college and are trying to meet new people. Overall, I would say don't live there.

As for the GLBT thing, as far as I know it was only one floor in the other building that they'd set aside mostly for upperclassmen.

Thanks for all that - it has been very helpful. Can't wait to get to USC!

I've only been a couple times but its definitely livable. Its mostly sophomores and up, a few freshman. Juniors and Seniors tend to live in houses since USC housing isn't guaranteed. Its right across the street from campus, close to the Lyon Center, Cafe 84 and the UV.
