Right now Im considering Tufts, Wesleyan, and Cornell. The closest thing to an International Relations major at Wesleyan (which is what I am interested in) seems to be the Certificate in International Relations. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it worth pursuing, or should I major in something more conventional such as Polysci or History?

I hear Tufts has a great IR program.

Something to note: when you major in Government at Wesleyan, you choose one of four concentrations, those being Comparitive Politics, International Politics, American Politics, and Political Theory. See http://www.wesleyan.edu/registrar/catalog/govtt.htm for more information!

The cool thing about the CIR is that it's not tied to any particular major. Granted, it's easiest to do as a government major (especially int'l politics concentration) because most of the requirements overlap. The only things you have to do above and beyond your government major requirements are: demonstrate foreign language proficiency (through "second-year" college level, which you can place out of with AP tests in some cases), take intro level econ, and a modern european course (you get to choose from three).

I think the CIR is definitely worthwhile. It's not as intense as trying to complete a double major because of the high overlap in requirements (although I've heard of people that ended up double majoring AND got the CIR), but it provides an added perspective and cohesion to your classes that you wouldn't get otherwise.
