Hi everyone, i’m an international student. I have a problem while completing my application for American University. If there is anyone who can help me out, i would be very thankful. I sent an email to the admission office and have not heard from them for a week.

1/ i know that I am supposed to submit AU Certificate of Finances and a bank letter showing proof of at least U.S. $59,109, but I don’t really see how this can be done in my country.

My parents have less then 59,109 dollars in their bank account, but they also have other properties (land, house, car) which can be added and I’m pretty sure the total amount of money is more than what is required.

Do you think that I can submit a bank letter showing that we have that amount of money in the bank and proof of possessing other valuable properties and their market prices instead?

2/ do you think that i should mail all the financial documents to the school? Or can i email it to them?

I previously worked as an admissions assistant at AU’s International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office directly working on CFIS forms and visas. My guess is that AU Admissions probably did not respond to your email because they have been extremely busy after reopening their offices coming out of winter break/New Years.

Unfortunately, you need to find some way to show the financial ability to pay USD $59,109. Your bank needs to write a letter on behalf of your parents saying they have enough to cover USD $59,109 for your program. The letter needs to be signed, notarized, and must be on bank letterhead/contact information. It does not need to have the exact amount in the account, but rather that your parents can cover the financial costs of attending. Also, you can show the financial ability to pay $59,109 in separate accounts. Some students show bank letters/account balances from 4 bank accounts or more if that helps at all.

From my previous experiences, properties like land, houses, or cars cannot be used to demonstrate financial ability. In the past, other students have used stocks or liquidable assets that can be transferred to real money, but never property.

You can email the financial documents to your admissions program (it seems you are going to attend AU Undergraduate) who will send them to ISSS. Or you can directly scan and email them to isssdocuments@american.edu or fax them to ISSS at 202-885-3354.

Any questions you have about being an international student or admissions can be answered by ISSS at 202-885-3350 by an international student adviser.

To be honest, I live in a developing country, and since the banking system is not reliable, my parents refuse to put all their money in the bank. We do have extra money, however. Do you think i can write a letter to explain my situation?

Ah, I see. I think your best bet would be to ask ISSS because they approve CFIS forms and distribute pre-visa documents to international students. Mira Hoxha, Informations Systems Coordinator at ISSS, approves CFIS forms so you can email her at fhoxha@american.edu. Or if you can, try calling ISSS during their operating hours 9 am to 5 pm Eastern Standard Timezone.
