I just want to take a minute to set the record straight. The College of General Studies is not a college for people who aren’t intelligent, or who get bad grades. It is simply a chance for those people that want to take a different approach to getting their degree from Boston University.

The great thing about CGS is that you can get a lot of your general requirements out of the way in your first two years at BU, and then are able to focus on your major and specific classes that you want to take. In addition, if you are not sure what you want to major in, you have TIME to explore everything and make a decision that way. In addition, many people who are in CGS end up continuing on to do something very different from what they originally thought they would do, while completing general requirements and not wasting time with classes they don’t end up needing.

Some other great things about CGS…

You really get to know your Professor on a more personal basis (this helps not only when you get grades, but for recommendations, or if you are sick or have a problem with something. If your Professor knows what kind of student you are, it is much easier to speak with them and get that resolved)

We have Study abroad programs specific to CGS, where as a Sophomore (or summer after freshman year) you can go abroad to London (way before most people get the chance to go abroad in college)

I just want to get the word out about this great college within Boston University that is either misrepresented or that not enough people know about. Please post any questions!!!

dude hell yeah dude this is my dream to go here

i know ppl thinm its funny but im not joking

bustudent27 can u tell me like what ur stats were
cuz CGS is getting more and more popular and more competitive eeeek

i agree with everythin u said abt this sounds so sicckkkk

i also applied directly to CGS! NO OTHER SCHOOLS LIKE SMG/CAS etc lol

sat4lyfe - if you’re a real person and not a ■■■■■, you need to relax. Play some video games. Read some books. Go chill with your friends. Take your mind off of college - you can’t change anything now.

bustudent18 thanks for the information, it seems like on cc many somewhat have a negative view of CGS for odd reasons.

i am a second year student so i am sure the stats have changed since i applied to bu… i also think each student brings something different - i am not too sure about what goes on in the admissions process but it is good to hear someone so enthusiastic about CGS!!!

Best of luck

A different approach? You mean taking set-in-place courses for two years? You might as well stay in high school…At least you’ll save a considerable amount of money by doing that.

no, i mean taking core curriculum classes that you would have to take anyways immediately so that you are free to concentrate on your major and future career.

but everyone prefers something different, so it is definitely important to research CGS, as well as any other universities/colleges you may be applying to. [General Studies Boston University](General Studies) is an important website which details the core curriculum/electives that you are able to take as a BU student.

BU is not an inexpensive school, but I personally felt like it was worth every penny.

I could say the same thing about any of the other colleges at BU. Each college just caters to a different group of people.

if its inexpenseive ppl just gotta suck it up and pay da 200k
