These schools have come onto DS's radar recently (along with UVM) and I really don't know much about them. (For example, just found out yesterday that Champlain has a very business-oriented program.) Who can pass on some info on these two, particularly the types of kids at each?

We visited Champlain and it’s a nice little school. It used to be an associate degree school for business majors but they have recently expanded their offerings to include BAs in other fields. They have a decent video-production dept and the campus is relatively small(but clean and modern) resting on the Burlington sprawl. You can also arrange to take some classes at UVM depending on your major. The students seemed happy and because of the layout and size of the school they also seemed very close-knit. Champlain was one of the first schools we looked at(there were many afterwards) but we still remember it fondly for its small, inviting atmosphere. It’s a 5 minute walk to downtown Burlington and the same to UVM’s campus. It’s a lively area to attend school if your son is looking for that. During the tour our D was really enjoying her time, right up until she heard the tour guide utter the words, “we currently do not have a biology or natural sciences dept!” So it was immediately taken off the list. If your son is looking for a small, semi-urban, modern school with ties to a state flagship and close proximity to one of the Northeast’s reknowned college towns, Champlain might be what he’s looking for.

FYI - Our D would have preferred to attend Champlain over UVM(if this personal opinion means anything). She found UVM’s campus “too state,” and preferred the progressive feel of Champlain’s campus. Also, we didn’t see much diversity in the student body(if that is important to your son).

Champlain has had BA programs for quite some time in fields other than business. I taught there 20 years ago in a BA program in another field.

Dug up an older thread on this same topic …

Thanks for the link to the thread. (Apparently I posted on it!) (Hey! That was months ago and I am soooo old. . . )

Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you know I’m an admission counselor at Champlain College. If you have any specific questions about the school that I can answer for you, I’d be happy to do so! Thank you, DowneasterDad, for sharing your experiences visiting Champlain! I’m glad your daughter enjoyed her visit here, even if we didn’t end up offering the program she was looking for.
